Who will be the next manager?

Page 1 of 3Next

According to mlbtraderumors.com, Brian Esposito was interviewed on Monday and Pujols is said to be interviewed today on Wednesday. Others that Padres were said to sit down with were Reuben Niebla and Mark Loretta. Others linked to the managerial position are Ryan Flaherty an Nick Hundley.

Thoughts on these names?

Pujols

We need a clubhouse leader that players will follow.

Apparently Pujols is getting a second interview

Yesterday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the Padres were entering the finalist stages of their managerial search.  In a new report today, Acee writes that the Padres are down “to no more than four finalists,” with Albert Pujols, Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla, Rangers special assistant Nick Hundley, and potentially an unspecified fourth name still on the radar.  A hiring is expected to be made by the end of the week.

Always have to tease the "unknown" candidate to keep the interest. However, possible that the Padres want to interview a candidate that is currently with Toronto or, I hesitate to say, the Dodgers.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing that it’s taking so long to settle on a manager?

In a shocking move, Preller names Machado as a player/manager!! Hahaha

The cited finalists are all a little... I dunno. We all love what Niebla's done, but I really would like him to stay where he's at. I've always had a soft spot for Nick Hundley, but he doesn't strike me as the leader we need right now.

Which leaves us with Pujols... Common sense says we need someone experienced for a club whose "win now" window is closing rapidly. BUT... Is Pujols maybe, possibly, the one guy that can come in and kick Manny's ass when things are listing in the clubhouse? Manny, I feel, is a fatal flaw in the construction of this team... He's not a good enough leader to take us where we need to go, but his ego demands he's the leader of any clubhouse he's in... Maybe Pujols is seen as the guy that can correct that mistake?

So Pujols got a 2nd,NINE hour interview, yet still hasn't been named the new Manager.

You would think that would have happened by now if it was going to

Maybe Pujols’ demands are a roadblock. He was passed over for LAA and BALT.

Just saw that Mattingly has stepped down as bench coach in TOR. Purely speculation, could we see Mattingly in SD?
