Ryan Bergert traded to KC for Catcher Freddie Fermin.....Four years of Fermin but he isn't a huge upgrade offensively is he?

He is a career (albeit part time) .268 hitter (playing out at a mid-90s wRC+ ... so yes a good upgrade offensively. Also he grades out as a better defensive catcher than either Diaz or Maldando both of whom will (should) be gone for 2026.

League minimum with long control (2030) does fill a role until Salas arrives ... he is 30 so don't expect him to be of value for the duration of his control.

Miller, Sears, and now Fermin all are long control and low salary ... toss in the likely departures of Cease and Suarez ... and does that allow the Padres to spend more on an OF upgrade or re-sign King / Arraez (given payroll constraints).

Still Bergert seems a high price but even decent catchers are just hard to find.

Fenn, do you actually think Ethan Salas will ever wear a San Diego Padre uniform? Brother, you are a helluva lot more optimistic than I am.

Preller doesn't know how to hold on to homegrown talent. He seems terribly averse to it.

I don't expect any help from our system.....well....ever. And no, trading prospects for established players doesn't count( well, it would if we actually won anything!)

I will suggest Fermin is a huge upgrade at C for then next few year ... both offensively and defensively ... price of Bergert and Kolek seems excessive so hope Preller and the scouting staff see more in Fermin than I do off the top of my head ... and maybe less in Kolek / Bergert.

Part may be both short and long run desperation of have such a sub-par catching roster ... when need two had none.

So when King returns: Pivetta; King; Cease; Darvish; Vasquez; with Sears (L) set up to bump one if needed? Musgrove back in 2026 to replace Cease and the spend the "saved money" to re-sign King?

After them, Waldron or Hart (L), I guess, become insurance ... maybe O.Cruz (L).

Wonder which catcher is moved to make room ... it is a toss up. Outside chance Diaz could go in a deal given the need for catchers ... thus saving some more money.

didn't he wear a Padres' uniform in ST?

I would give Salas a 50/50 shot at being on the 26 man at some point ... the upside is the shortage of catchers and even if his hitting lags he (reportedly) is that elite defensively to justify the slot (worst case the LHH Austin Hedges ... who has had a long career).

Push against that have some concern about his back (not ideal for a catcher although most don't see a long term issue) ... and do think Preller would deal him for the right return of immediate impact (maybe not now but before he becomes a Padres).

No real competition for Salas in the system ... so he does have a chance in maybe 2028.

Given the trade chips already deployed ... and likely the demands for big bats such as Kwan, Duran were not going to be met (and could have been factor in the two trades made) ... beginning to look like a "rental" upgrade for LF is the remaining option.

Laureano? but not sure there is enough in the tank even for him ... Reynolds, Morgan, Pena, Rodriguez, Neighbors, Lowe, Lizarraga ???????

The Mets are going to acquire outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Orioles, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. DiComo adds that prospects Raimon GómezAnthony Nunez and Chandler Marsh are heading to the Orioles.

Current reports suggest that the Padres are NOT going to trade either Cease or Suarez ... go with the mega pitching staff. Guessing that Preller was not getting anyone of consequence being offered to help in 2025.

That can change in a flash with one phone call.

Sort of falls to the deep RP options to land the at least a good rental LF/9th hitter.

WAIT: and Stephen Kolek?

I see this as a bad deal. I really did not want to lose Bergert.

If we can solve LF for this year and next.....and keep all three of the tall Lefthanders.....I'll be happy.

That was probably the kiss of death wasn't it?

Looks like the Mets got Cedric Mullens for 3 minor league relief pitchers.

Surely we could have beat that deal?

Bad business, man.

Didn't work last year( when we had superior offense) and neither Cease nor Suarez has shown any reason they'd be of use in the short season.

Gotta move BOTH!
