From today's DFR ...
Outfielder Tirso Ornelas doubled, singled, and drove in a pair Friday night. Ornelas got off to a very slow start but has started to put things together over the last two weeks. Ornelas’ eight doubles rank second in the league.

And again ...
Another big night by Tirso Ornelas. The Padres development staff, before the season and during 2019, made some significant swing adjustments with the big Tijuana native – one of the biggest was getting him to put the ball in the air more. So far this year, of his 17 hits, nine are doubles. No home runs yet, but at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, they are coming.

Tirso Ornelas, 21, collected his league-high 15th double – his sixth extra-base in as many games – to drive in two runs in the home club’s big inning. The lefty has a .738 OPS for the month. The right fielder had a scare in the third when he ran into the wall down the line, but looked to be fine later in the game.

Top Prospects and Others of Note: Tirso Ornelas hit well, collecting his first homer of the season. The Tijuana native had an up-and-down season last year in Fort Wayne but he performed well in winter ball and has taken that momentum into 2022. Ornelas hit .417/.440/.542 with seven RBI in the series. Ornelas is hitting .318 through three weeks but has just one extra-base hit. If Ornelas can tap into some power this season, he’s still young enough to dream on.

Tirso Ornelas had a four-hit night to tie his career-high. Ornelas had three singles, a double, and scored a pair of runs. The 22-year-old has been a very streaky hitter throughout his tenure in the Padres’ system and 2022 has been no exception. Ornelas hit .317 in April, .188 in May, and he’s been scorching in June. Ornelas’ four-hit night raised his June slash-line to .393/.433/.554. The left-handed-hitting outfielder hasn’t found his power stroke in Double-A but he’s continued to show a solid approach and good bat-to-ball skills.

Tirso Ornelas. The big left-handed hitter collected his first career five-hit game, including a pair of doubles, ending the day with his average sitting at an even .300. Ornelas, 22, had a brutal May, but he’s posted an .830 OPS over the last two months while striking out just 31 times in 172 plate appearances. He’s started all but one game in left field this year as he’s quickly shifted down the defensive spectrum, so he’s going to need to continue to increase his production.

Padres: OF Tirso Ornelas
The Padres’ 24-year-old outfielder could be on the verge of a long-awaited big league breakthrough after eight years in the organization. The team’s No. 18 prospect in 2024, Ornelas opened camp with five extra-base hits in his first 15 at-bats -- building off a strong 2024 showing in Triple-A (and a similarly excellent showing in the Mexican Winter League). Ornelas’ path to a roster spot got trickier with the recent signings of Jason Heyward and Connor Joe. But he could be lining himself up for a midseason callup. -- AJ Cassavell
