Ted Leitner Retires
Quote from hoffy51 on January 16, 2021, 5:22 amWhat do you think about this? I like Ted personally, and think he is a really good guy. I like him as a TV sports guy. Funny. I thought he and Jerry Coleman had some good moments together. But I didn't particularly care for him as a baseball announcer. Actually hated his home run call. "Ball going, ball gone!" Uh. Anyway, good guy and I wish him nothing but the best in his well-deserved retirement.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 16, 2021, 7:35 amHe is definitely a Padres Icon and no one loves this team any more than he does.
When I lived in San Diego he was still just a News anchor on TV.
I don't think he was even the sports guy on the broadcast yet?
I've always thought he would have been better on TV though because of his style.
Sometimes it's hard to tell what happened by the way he says things without the visual.
I love TGJ though and am super excited that he will be the guy taking his place and also very happy he will spend the rest of his life still being around the Padres.
He deserves that.
But you can't listen to Jr. without thinking of Sr......and that's always a good thing.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 16, 2021, 7:43 amLiving in AZ for the last 16+ years, I have listened to a lot of baseball on XM. And dont always get the SD broadcast. I can tell you, listening to the other local guys, Leitner was one of the best. Clear, concise, good tone to his voice. I got too meet him a couple of years ago when SD was in town for the Dbacks. I was at the hotel for a work conference. He was a nice guy, spent a couple of minutes talking to me.
I for one will miss hearing his voice on the broadcast, TG Jr and Agler will be fine, but it wont sound like SD baseball for me for a couple of years.

Quote from hoffy51 on January 16, 2021, 8:13 amI wasn't aware that TGJ was going to replace Ted. To me, it is eerie how much Jr sounds like Sr. When I hear Jr talk on the radio, it seems to me that Sr is talking. And that laugh is identical. I like it.

Quote from WindsorUK on January 16, 2021, 9:32 amI've never known quite what to make of Uncle Teddy.
Is he an East Coast shtick guy? Is he just a TV station sports guy? Is he actually a fan of the game? Whether it be Padre baseball or Charger football, Ted seems to be there for Ted.
That said, he's been around SO long he's become part of the scene. And his tribute to The Colonel was awesome!
He will be missed. But look forward to hearing Junior full time.

Actually, Agler is taking over the play by play for Ted. TGJ will be the color commentator. Should be a good combo.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 16, 2021, 10:16 amUncle Teddy is kind of a love him or not guy with his "shtick" ... I loved it. On his sleeve Homer: "my boys", etc...
And I'll never be able to order a steak in a restaurant without hearing "... I love a steak that SIZZLES" in my head.
I haven't listened to him much recently out of area, but think he's smart to step down now.
We moved to SD in 2000, lived there 10 yrs, got hooked on Pads starting around 2002-03. So that was my first experience with Jerry Coleman. Appreciate what a great man he was & his career in baseball, but both wife & I really thought he (& subsequently Dick Enberg) was way past his prime. His unique voice & diction was frankly just hard to understand.

Quote from BoosterSD on January 16, 2021, 11:18 amI started listening to the radio broadcast around 1990, and Coleman and Leitner were in a really good groove at that time. It was hard listening to Coleman get older, and not be as coherent as he was when I was younger. Have not heard Teddy in awhile, but the last time I did, he was still sounding pretty good.
