Spring Training 2026
Quote from Randy Manese on March 2, 2026, 10:21 amPreller may be looking for some sort of indication from prospective new ownership whether he can go ahead and make the move(s) to get Giolito or Littell and/or make trades to improve the SP or quality of the line-up/bench. Any group that is going to spend close to 3 billion dollars on the Padres probably expects this team to be very competitive for several more season so there is the possibility that we may see some moves in the next week or so.

Quote from fenn68 on March 2, 2026, 11:28 amGiven many teams want to bolster their SP ... and on the surface both Giolito and Littell would ... speculation waffles between both are asking well above what any team is willing to pay (given what may be perceived as risk) ... and the potential of questionable medicals (Giolito) and with Littell, he is only two seasons removed from a RP and some question as to whether he can sustain a SP workload for a 3rd season.
Likely ... for all teams ... a combination of contract demand and perceived risk. At this stage both may be trying to wait out some contender getting a critical injury to a SP then expecting that team to pay up. If not, maybe not get a worse deal than on the table now (if any).
Would not rule out Preller and a creative contract IF Buehler, Canning, Marquez, and Sears all fail to secure that 5th/6th SP role or if one of the presumed #1-4 blow out their arms in ST.
Unless someone gets lucky ... Giolito and Little are mid to bottom of the rotation arms ... not sure how much a teams want to pay for that.

Quote from fenn68 on March 2, 2026, 11:39 amUnlikely any new ownership will get approved (even if announced as the winning bidder) until mid-season. So maybe see a big move at the trade deadline but more likely some next off-season impacts.
Basically nothing left all the impressive on the FA market ... and although Preller could trade some RP and prospects now (and probably will) not expecting a major deal without major prospects in play. Again, circle the wagons until the trade deadline then make the needed moves.
Actually, to support that multi-year success approach, might see first a string of re-worked contract extensions mid-season for the likes of King (eliminate his opt out), Morejon, and maybe even Pivetta (eliminating his opt out) in an effort to keep a stable SP staff ... no near term prospects stepping in at those levels. Never know if one of the candidates for #5 SP really impresses ... might see a new multi-year deal for him (Canning could be the most likely). Would not rule out Laureano or Andujar either. Take care of your own before looking elsewhere.

Quote from Commie on March 2, 2026, 5:29 pmI like France over Castellanos. Good D at 1b, same hitting profile (with less pop albeit). Better recent performance. Not going to drink in the dugout, etc. Saw they played him at 3b the other day. If you see him given a start at 2b or lf, writing is on the wall for Nick.
KC should take a look at NC though. Not sure if Marte is a real answer there.

What makes you think Andujar is worth a multi year deal? Too easy to find someone like him at the end of FA such as Castellanos or France to commit multiple years.

Depends on how well he performs in the season (goes for all the candidates) combined with what the extension looks like. Could be just one year plus options. Considering they will have to deal with FA Andujar, Laureano, Castellanos, and France along with a weak bench ... that is a lot of replacements to find (and sign) next winter (who they will have to pay something). IF they have a player they like ... take him off the market and minimize the moving parts before the off-season ... going to have to hunt down additional FA anyway since some of the current crop will not perform well enough to warrant extending and some will just not want to extend preferring testing FA (although somewhat a risk given the potential lockout when no one can sign). Can't guarantee next year does not yield the next Heyward, Gurriel, Joe, Gonzalez (of 2025) or even that Castellanos / France are not the same at this point.
Simply don't think they SHOULD extend any of them ... rather consider extensions (reworked contracts) if new ownership wants to make an impression and stabilize the team going forward. IF the candidate is performing.
Having said all that ... Preller generally likes to let players test FA (and has little problem letting them go) ... so re-worked contracts mid-season are unlikely UNLESS (the comment that generated the extension comment) new ownership is willing to spend more to "insure" a strong future. Of course this is all moot if new ownership is not significantly upping the budgeted payroll ... between built-in contract increases and growing ARB decisions (think Miller) the Padres could be near the current payroll level without signing any FA (or fewer than the replacements needed and with less quality given rising prices).
Prediction: no mid-season extensions ... a mad scramble post lockout to backfill for the lost FA.

Quote from fenn68 on March 3, 2026, 2:38 amWith only 11 ST games in and 3 weeks to go ... way to early to draw conclusions but never too early to express some concern about players trying to earn a spot on the team (the lock vets are not really an issue here). Two who have been spotlighted have not impressed ... Song and Castellanos.
Song has looked weak in the field (and he was supposed to be a plus defender) and clearly looks over matched at the plate (leads the team in K). Sure, may take a while longer to adjust to MLB but maybe a start every day in AAA is better than a bench slot with the Padres.
Although the idea of Castellanos appeals ... and he has made some nice plays at 1B (better than I expected) but remember he was a below average hitter last season in PHIL and has not hit well in his 14 AB this spring (with a nod to its early and small sample size). While he has made some nice plays at 1B (can debate whether an average defensive 1B would have made the same plays) he also has made some bad plays (throw into LF, over committed towards 2B on a ground ball vacating 1B) ... overall how may bad plays vs an average defensive 1B makes him a bad 1B? He has to show he can hit in my mind to beat out France (also a below average hitter in 2025) but a superior defensive option (at least based on 2025) or even someone not yet on the Padre roster via trade (remember they have some "excess" RP with some without options to use as good trade chips).
If both continue to struggle and neither make the 26 man roster ... will create an interesting domino effect on roster composition.

I guess all Castellanos needed was my critique to get going ... starts today 2 for 2 with a 2 run HR.
Hopefully this also worked on Song.
