The bulk of the Padres' pitchers and catchers have already reported to the team's Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz. Their first formal workout is slated for Wednesday, with the full squad set to join them on Feb. 17.

Spring Training is the season where we get excited by some unknowns who tear it up ... then as the season starts they fade into oblivion ... but once in a while someone actually makes it.

Enter Yohanny Perlaza ... 26 year old switch-hitter ... former Cub minor leaguer and last season in Korea. Had very good stats as he worked up from A+ to AAA (2021-23) then as a 6 year minor league FA signed in Korea for 2024 (again good stats). He is my helium player for the spring.

Now understand he is not a good fielder (OF or INF) based on scouting reports. Built like a fireplug. Never listed as a top prospect. However, he can hit (combo of line-drive and power) and in AZ in the spring that should look good. So, a good chance he gets into the discussion for a 26 man slot (at least until the the last week).

Not a ringing endorsement BUT I do see a small chance he may sneak in for a DH role (if the Padres like Arraez at 1B). Consider the current alternatives. With a platoon of  Heyward (L) / Joe in LF ... Wade a super utility bench piece ... Diaz the back-up catcher ... who is fighting for the last two roster slots and do they fit a DH role? Lockridge - Rosario - Ornelas (L) and a bunch of other non-roster types ... the door could be open for a switch-hitting DH at the bottom of the batting order.

Something to watch.

Someone to watch in ST is Cronenworth and his return to a full time 2B. Past two seasons he has been considered an under performer at 1B ...not worth his contract. Will his return to 2B elevate his offense and being 2 years older will his 2B defense still be above average?

In 2021-22 Cronenworth was an All-Star 2B ... wRC+ 126/117 .. plus defense at 2B ... WAR 1.9/3.7 .... about the 5th best 2B in MLB.

In 2023-24 ... shifted primarily to 1B ... wRC+ drops to 91/105 ... WAR drops 0.8/2.1 ...

IF Cronenworth's offense even settles back somewhere in the middle (around wRC+ 110) with somewhere near his old 2B defense ...he would be a top 10 (maybe top 5) ML 2B. At $12MM that is fair value (maybe even a bit of a bargain) for a 2B with that production in 2025.

I do wish we had acquired a legit 1B......Mountcastle.....Torkelson(although jury still out).

Crone indeed needs to play 2b every day.

I will actually be in Peoria from March 19th-24th

Would not rule that out yet ... even late ST. Key is if they move Suarez and can't get a SP in the return they may shift to a 1B. Of course ST may give one of the current 1B options a chance to convince the Padres to start the season with them. Same goes for a team be willing to trade a 1B ... how does ST showcase their 1B options.

On the other hand, if they end up liking Arraez at 1B (live with his defense) ... maybe adding a bat does not come position bound.

At this point, ST for the Padres and anyone who may be willing to deal a bat will do a lot to determine who (if anyone) is needed and available.
