Not sure about Sheets in the 2 hole against a lefty. As good as he's been he has pretty extreme splits both this year and for his career. I would like to see France move up too. I also think it's somewhat telling that Castellanos isn't in there again with a lefty set to get the bulk of the work for the second consecutive day. He might be close to the end of his rope.

He is likely the one on the bubble ... but who replaces him?

Wonder if part of that decision might be the projection on Cronenworth's return (does not sound that is anytime soon). That in turn may impact the add of a 2B to return Tatis to the OF or and OF and keep Tatis at 2B. Song does not seem ready to take 2B full time.

Thinking that France / Andujar can handle 1B/DH with Sheets in LF but Castellanaos' replacement has to provide some OF defense option (and hopefully some offense) for platooning with Sheets at a minimum. I guess Laureano can still flop between LF and RF.

Besides the projection on Cronenworth ... who is actually out there as an upgrade might push the decision one way or another. Some of the EP players (e.g. Bowen, Reyes) are doing well but not "great" and it is the PCL where the stats are often misleading. Maybe a trade of an "extra" RP for an OF or a 2B?

Tatis finally gets one. He's had a ton of hits lately. Hopefully this is a sign that he's getting his swing locked in.

Why did Stammen not bring Morejon in? That was Morejon time. I had a strong feeling that when Bradgley was brought in, the inning what blow up in the Padres face. IMO, mismanagement of the BP.

I know It was 68 pitches, but, 3-1, trying to secure the series, I really thought the BP was coming in, they two guys get in base, I was pretty sure Stammen was gonna pull him out, he didn't, then a walk, same thing, then the BP, and finally he did, I know he was trying to stretch his outing one more inning, but if you don't have your top guys available (no idea why) isn't better to have your 2 tier RP getting into the game with a clean inning?

I thought Stammen left King in 1 batter too long. The issue was more self inflicted damage than bullpen management in my opinion though. Up 2 late with our bullpen Tatis should have just gone to first with Tena's grounder. I'm still not convinced either way on whether or not Bogaerts got the bag, but there's no excuse for rushing and not making clear contact when they had no shot at the double play. Then you add in a few walks and a hit batter and we end up with that disaster of an inning.

The loss has overshadowed Tatis's first HR of the season.

Padres need to win the rubber match tomorrow.

GO PADRES!

King just finished a very low pitch count 6 innings inducing a ton of ground balls ... and he is the ace of the staff ... not going to yank him quickly just because the first two get on base. One ground ball double play and he could have been out of the inning. Then not sure when Rodriguez got up and when the bullpen said he was ready to come in ... so that should factor into Stammen's move. No issue with the use of Rodriguez since he has been one of the strongest pieces in the pen recently.

Tatis HR has to be a major relief ... so good. However, Tatis did look shaky on a couple of plays defensively ... decisions on where to make the throw and the throws themselves.

Wtf was Merrill thinking?

Wtf was Merrill thinking?

In both Merrill's case and Song's case ... guessing the sign came from the bench in an attempt to avoid the double play grounder ... and in both cases the runner had the base stolen .. so not a bad move EXCEPT

  1. in both cases the runners had terrible slides coming disengaged from the bag and got tagged out (time to once again critique the head first slide ... or at least having the runner perfect not over sliding)
  2. in both cases the hitter neglected to make contact on strike three pitches ... bad

Poor execution at both ends of each play.
