RHP Randy Vásquez vs LHP DJ Herz -- 3:45 pm

RHP Matt Waldron vs LHP Mitchell Parker -- 3:45 pm

RHP Dylan Cease vs LHP Patrick Corbin -- 9:05 am

The Padres are coming off a series win against the tough Guardians and headed to the nations capital to face the Nationals, who the Padres swept last month.  The last 3 games the Padres had solid SP. Let's hope they continue that. Last time against the Nats, Waldron, Cease and Mazur pitched. This time it will be Vasquez.

The Padres enter this series in sole second place as the Dbacks lost Monday evening. The Nats are entering in this series with a 3-game win streak, which was against the Reds.

Let's sweep'em again!

GO PADRES!

DJ Herz is starting for the Nats tonight. That makes it 3 lefty starters, but Corbin and Herz have been pretty bad.

Padres win season series from the Nats. Arraez hits his 3 HR of the season. All with the Padres. Profar hits a HR leading the club with 15.

Outstanding performance by Vasquez pitching 6 shutout innings on only 68 pitches. He could have gone another inning or two. I was disappointed Shildt took him out so soon. I did not think it was necessary with that pitch count.

The Padres SP has allowed only allowed 2 runs in the last 4 games.

Let's take game two for the series.

How about Vasquez?!?!?!

Zero walks in 6 innings, zero runs earned, and on only 68 pitches! Man, this kid is putting a good string of outings together, apparently improving every time out( something I'd hope to see in Mazur)

And nice to see our All Stars carry the load offensively.

Another nice win. The starting pitching has been phenomenal the last 4 games. A couple thoughts on the offense. First, I think it's time to bench Cronenworth against lefties. He's hitting .200/.270/.264 against them. Solano's OPS is almost 300 points better. Put him in the lineup and let Jake pinch hit and play defense late in the game. Second, Merrill has been just as bad against lefties. He's been really good overall, but his splits are pretty drastic. We're talking .310/.345/.469 against right handed pitching and .196/.224/.333 against lefties. I do want to keep seeing him get opportunities to improve. Having said that it could be worth looking into finding someone who can hit lefties and at least occasionally play CF if someone is out there to be found. Lastly, I think I've seen enough of Bryce Johnson. I think we can find a better way to use a roster spot.

Davis Peralta is a much better hitter than Bryce Johnson and hits lefties well. I would rather see him in LF than Johnson, even though he lacks speed out there.

Tirso Ornelas hits lefties well. He was just added to the 40-man roster. The Padres should bring him up and send Johnson down.

Peralta has pretty extreme splits for his career. He doesn't hit lefties well at all. Tirso has pretty even splits this year. They've been less consistent in past years. I think he's more likely to be added to replace Peralta if he struggles than he is to compliment him. I think Eguy Rosario might be the one to watch now that they're experimenting with him in RF.

Padres probably are making Johnson’s decision a bit dependent on when Tatis returns … once OK’d to get back into game action the opinion is that a very short time to get to game speed.

Doubt in a Wild Card race they opt for Ornelas a prospect with no experience and a history of very hot or very cold. I could see Rosario if he showed well in the OF. One hedge on Johnson is that he can play CF (defensively at least) … so if Merrill needs a break who covers CF … Wade?. I guess we need to leave the door open for the return of Azocar … not much of a hitter (but was better than Johnson) and can play CF.

If the deal is there … the trade deadline COULD yield an OF RHH (hopefully with some potential for emergency CF) to at least platoon with Peralta until Tatis returns.

Side: Solano has been hitting well … Padres have been struggling vs LHP … especially Cronenworth and to a degree Arraez … yet Solano has been benched vs LHP. Not an OF so 1B/DH are his only options. Bogaerts return just shut Solano down.

After the Nats score 3 in the bottom of the 1st the Padres score 11 unanswered…….so far.

That’ll do

And the bullpen closed it out without incident. It's nice to get a stress free win every once in awhile.
