San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners: Sept 10-11

The Padres are coming off a series loss. Now, they play a team that swept them in a 2-game series last July. The Padres always have a tough time with this team. This time they are fortunate to miss pitcher Logan Gilbert, who has always been tough on them. The Padres need to find a way to win.
Mazur pitched in the last two-game series against the Mariners and he is no longer with the team. The last time the Padres swept the Mariners was at Petco Park in 2021. Also, it should be a whole lot cooler in Seattle.
Darvish struggled in his first start since returning from the IL allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in 2.2 IP. Let's hope he bounces back. He has a 1.59 ERA in 3 starts on the road that include two shutout performances.
Shildt is skipping Pérez's turn in the rotation and going with King, who is coming off a solid 6 IP performance allowing only 1 run on Friday against the Giants. He has pitched better on the road(2.86 ERA) than at home(3.39 ERA). He faced the Mariners last July at Petco allowing 2 runs in 6 solid innings and 9K in a 2-0 loss.

Dodgers lost to Cubs 10-4. Padres gain 1/2 game. Imanaga on the mound tomorrow for Cubs.
Mets win and Braves lost. Padres lead in wild card race shrinks and the Braves, for the moment, are knocked out of a wild card spot.

Kirby and Woo are gonna be tough.

Focusing on the last 30 days ... Seattle is sitting 20th in MLB in OPS (.676) based on being 24th in BA (.222), 6th in OBP (.322), and 20th in SLG (.357). The one thing they seem to do is take the BB .. 3rd in MLB. So IF the Padres can command the zone ... should be able to contain their offense.
Overall pitching in the last 30 days is 12th in ML with a 3.93 ERA ... but to focus on the two starters:
Woo ... 2.56 ERA (5 starts) ... 4 very good only 1 shaky (vs LAA in LA). He will be tough.
Kirby ... 6.23 ERA (5 starts) ... on 2 good starts (vs OAK and PITT). He has the talent but been weak in the 2nd half so could be a SD advantage tonight. A lot rests on Darvish.

Bogaerts getting the start at SS with Cronenworth at 2B and Solano at 1B. They hinted at it after the last game and now they're making the move. With Kim's shoulder keeping him out longer than expected I think it's the right move.

Agree it is the right move to get Solano’s bat in the line-up … worth the risk of weakening the defense.
Seems to be growing speculation that Kim may not be back (or fit) for the rest of the season. Getting Bogaerts regular time at SS for three weeks will help in the playoffs.
Additionally, some thought that the Padres will not re-sign Kim after 2024 … given payroll / luxury tax issues … so, re-testing Bogaerts at SS may help that decision. Side: some thought in SF that Kim will head to them in 2025 with his good relationship with Melvin and his best buddy on the team (Lee).
IF Kim is ruled out for the season, McCoy is maybe OK but not hitting at all, so the Padres did sign Nick Ahmed who is working out in AZ … has the glove and is a veteran (useful for the playoffs) … did not hit in 2024 but has a history that could kick in for a short spurt (not worse than McCoy). Possible a 60 day IL of Kim, option of McCoy, adding Ahmed?

Is Laz Diaz having a bad game?, or is he always this bad, his strike zone has been so weird tonight, strike below the knees, ball right at the knees, 🙁

The Padres win.
Darvish pitched better allowing only 2 runs and Suarez earns his 32nd save.
Nando hits a 3-run shot and Manny moves ahead of Nate Colbert to become the all time HR leader in franchise history.
The Mets and Dodgers lost. The Braves and Dbacks won. The Padres move up to 4.5 games back of the Dodgers and pad their lead in the wild card race.
Let's take game 2 for the two game sweep. King on the mound.
