The Padres off a tough series against the Brewers. Now they are playing the Mariners, who were swept by the Padres a month ago, and they will bve looking for payback on their own turf.

I don't know what's wrong with this offense. They have a hard time putting the ball in play. Is it that they are unwilling to make adjustments at the plate, too picky about pitches, batting coach or something else. But, the whole team is struggling to get hits? I know that the pitching they face is good. But, C'mon, other teams have hit top solid pitchers hard. Why not the Padres? I hope the Padres offense breaks loose in this series.

Vasquez is our best pitcher in this series. We don't know what we are going to get with Buehler. Giolito is expected to make his season debut in this series. I am not sold on him yet. But we will see how he does. The Vasquez/Hancock matchup is the marque matchup in this series.

NL West Matchups
Dodgers(26-18) at Angels(16-28)
Dbacks(20-22) at Rockies(17-27)
Giants(18-26) at A's(22-21)

GO PADRES!

Listened to a Preller interview this AM.

Apparently there will be a roster move today ... nothing specific at that point.

I SPECULATE that they will be adding a RP to cover the next two games (pen has been heavily worked) and when they add Giolito on Sunday they option that player. (Jacobs?)

That scenario may not yield a permanent DFA today but likely will.

For those speculating on Salas ... Preller indicated the organization does not see him ready ... needs to check a few more boxes. Still very high on his future and will promote him when they see him as ready ... implying not going to hole him back because of age or service time.

Waldron DFA ... Jacob called up to help the pen until Giolito is added and then Jacob will be optioned.

We will see if Waldron clears waivers.

Change:

Padres Place Matt Waldron On 15-Day Injured List, Recall Alek Jacob

The Padres are placing right-hander Matt Waldron on the 15-day injured list, per a team announcement. Righty Alek Jacob is being recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

I guess the injury occurred on his way to the exit for the DFA!

The Padres beat Hancock and the Mariners to win the season series.

Vasquez was outstanding pitching 6 shutout innings and Miller closes the door to earn his MLB leading 14th save.

Kudos to Sheets and Andujar.

Buehler on the mound tomorrow.

GO PADRES!

Yeah, I hope the $700+ million albatross at the top of the order will decide to join them at some point 🙄

Something has really kicked-in for Vasquez ... season ERA down to 2.86 (very good) and giving 5-6 innings keeping the Padres in games. Velocity up and command much improved. Hope it continues.

As we are seeing with the offense, past performance does not guarantee future results ... but should give a decent expectation. If so, the SP for the rest of the season could be playoff quality from an ERA standpoint:

2.63 ... King (2026)

2.68 ... Vasquez (2026)

3.41 ... Giolito (2025 / 145 innings)

3.77 ... Canning (2025 / 76 innings before injury)

4.93 ... Buehler (2025 / 126 innings)

Then IF Pivetta can return for the stretch run / playoffs could be better since in 2025 he had a 2,87 ERA. (I am not expect Musgrove or Marquez to factor in for 2026).

Plus would expect Preller to be scanning rental SP at the trade deadline (if needed). SP has a CHANCE to be good #1-5.

Now the offense???????

Again yesterday the big three (batting #1-2-3) Merrill - Tatis - Machado go 0 for 12 with 4K ... and looked bad. So did Song and Fermin.

Fortunately #4-5-6-7 (Sheets - Bogaerts - Andujar - Laureano) went 8 for 15 with only 2K.

Have to believe ... at some point ... the big three will snap out of this and move towards their histories. Can't think all three will perform as they are 30+% under their pasts. Need that to happen before the others hit their slumps to avoid hitting a losing streak.

I guess the optimist in me looks at the 2025 performances by the current SP options, the RP, and the offense ... and considering 25% of the season is in the bank with a playoff position (and tied in the loss column with the LAD) ... have to project making the playoffs with the team as it is currently constructed. The rest of the league (except ATL) are having their own issues, so that helps.
