The Padres are coming off a disappointing weekend and now they face the tought Phillies with tough pitching. Matt Waldron is coming of the IL to pitch the first game. The Padres may have to face Bryce Harper, who has been a thorn in the Padres side. He is currently in th IL since June 7 and may return for the series.
The Padres are fortunate to miss their best pitcher Ranger Suarez. The Padres have not won a series from the Phillies since May 2022 in Philadelphia.
The offense needs to produce runs. Leaving 13 men on base on Sunday is unacceptable, especially when they had 2 bases-loaded opportunities. Anyone ever notice thay have no problem hitting flyouts when the bases are empty, but can't do it when the runners are in scoring position or bases-loaded.
Top NL West games: Dodgers(53-32) host White Sox(28-56), Giants(45-39) at Dbacks(41-42)

Waldron doesn't look present....
Once he walks a guy, he basically runs to 3rd unopposed.
And with Maldonado behind the plate, this could get ugly.

Not sure the fascination with Waldron by the Padres ... just not effective and has to be frustrating for the team / catchers ... clearly for me and the fans (some).
In 2024 he had one good month (Jun) with a 2.45 ERA in 6 starts. No other month under 4.00 and in those months a 5.73 ERA in 20 starts. Worse post All-Star game with an ERA of 8.10 in 7 starts.
If Darvish is ready in 6 days to take a start, could see Waldron optioned after the game to get another RP into the mix until then. If Darvish is not ready yet, would give Baez a spot start (he is pitching well in AA). I would not call up Hart who is just not effective even in AAA. Coming soon should be Bergert so if that is the case Waldron really is a short-timer.

Uh....Schildt needs to bench Manny for not running out of the box. Hits the wall and only a single? Bad form, Manny!
Ends up costing us a run. If he's on 2nd when FTJ gets a 2 out single, he runs home.
Schildty definitely should send a message.

This team is not playing good baseball right now.
No way we win series against good teams at the moment.
Not sure about bad teams either.
They gotta get out of this funk.......as soon

To be on the bright side for this moment. They are playing bad baseball; however, realistically we never thought they would win the division. They are still well within the running for a Wild Card, always the realistic goal. We are expecting some better SP back soon. And if we can upgrade LF, even a little, the team should finish strong down the stretch.
