The Padres head north to Detroit to tame the tough Tigers. Fortunately, they will not have to face any LHPs this series. Also, they will miss top Tiger pitchers Skubal, Mize and Jobe. OF Margot is on the IL and OF Carpenter, who was pulled from Sunday's game with hamstring tightness, will also likely be out. The first two pitching matchups is favorable to the Padres and the third is up in the air.
Last season the Padres took two from the Tigers at Petco Park. They were one out away from a sweep when Suarez gave up a grandslam after loading the bases. Suarez looks better this year.
The Padres are still without top hitters Merrill, who I hope will return soon, and Cronenworth as well as pitchers Hoeing and Darvish.
Top NL West games: Giants(14-8) host Brewers(12-10), Dodgers(16-7) at Cubs(14-10), Dbacks(13-9) host Rays(9-13)

Should know more soon but IF the best course for Arraez is the 7 day concussion IL ... who is called up. Have to consider Arraez was the starting 1B ... less concerned about a LH vs RH bat.
I guess Gurriel / Sheets (L) can cover 1B and Gonzalez / Ornelas (L) can cover LF plus Joe is still around for both slots. The one of those 5 can cover the DH role.
Padres have only 2 rostered players for call-up:
- Campusano ... DH option (has not played much 1B) ... hot bat
- McCoy ... SS/2B good defense but poor hitter ... just gives some insurance for that middle INF if Wade in CF.
If they opted for a non-roster option ... who gets DFA off the 40 man?

Don't think Arraez will go on the IL although he may miss one or more games in Detroit. Not looking for either Cronenworth or Merrill any time soon - project Croney to be ready by somewhere between 13-20 May and Merrill about 18-25 May. When we get them back want to keep them in the line-up. Lockridge likely will be first one back - I can see the week of 4-9 May but he may be sent down to LE or EP for a short rehab.
On the pitching side, encouraged by what I'm reading about Darvish - he also looks like an end of May rostering with a very short rehab in LE. Reynolds should be ready to begin his rehab and Hoeing should not be that far behind. These developments will give us some options as we head into a tough June schedule.

Joe seems to be pressing at the plate; not the same hitter I saw in ST and although he got his walks in EP, the hard contact rate was not existent. With his creaky knees, Heyward may not come back until after Merrill does but if he can still field his position likely not off the roster until after June. Not so sure about Gurriel; this could be his last homestand coming up.

Acee reporting that Arraez will go on the 7 day concussion IL ... no report on his replacement.

While I can see a lot of reasons of dropping some of the current players ... having a lot of trouble coming up with replacements I have faith in.
Will Preller orchestrate at least one trade?

Unfortunate for the Padres but probably shortened because it is a concussion IL vice a regular 10 day IL. I'd bring up Campy at this point. Don't see much fodder in the system to give up a 7 day absence costing us a prospect.

Agree on calling up Campy and just sit him at DH ... trial by fire.
There is just a part of me that would debate also calling up McCoy for SS/2B/3B insurance for the next 7 days (maybe at the expense of Joe). With Iglesias at a 2B only Wade could come in to fill in the INF and he would have to be covered by Joe or Ornelas in CF giving some issues in LF and CF.
The only way a trade works if it is for an upgrade that benefits all of 2025 if they perceive the futures of Heyward, Gurriel, Joe, Lockridge, and Gonzalez to be bleak. We know Preller has no problem dealing prospects but at this point in the season will be hard to find a trading partner.

Per Cassavell it IS Mason McCoy who is being called up for INF insurance.
Don't expect him to bat much ... so maybe more playing time for Joe / Ornelas and I would expect Sheets gets a full time role which will test him vs LHP.
