Mazur(1-3, 7.84 ERA) vs Rodriguez(12-4, 3.83 ERA) - 4:05pm
King(8-6, 3.28 ERA) vs Kremer(4-6, 4.43 ERA) - 1:05pm
Vasquez(3-5, 4.17 ERA) vs A. Suarez(5-4, 3.48 ERA) - 10:35am

The Padres head to Baltimore riding high with a 5-game winning streak and their 2nd no-hitter on franchise history to play the tough Orioles. The Padres have been beating many tough teams this season including the Guardians. The Padres are fortunate to miss their best their pitcher Corbin Burns. But, they will be facing a pretty healthy offense, except for former Padre speedy Jorge Mateo, who just was placed in the IL.

Mazur is listed as pitching Friday. That is concerning, because he has not pitched well. Also, LHP Tom Cosgrove has been activated.

GO PADRES!

Thanks Ultra!

I was under the impression that we were skipping the number five spot in the rotation due to the off day on Monday.  If that has changed, God only help us with Mazur on the mound.  I like the kid and think he may very well have a nice future ahead of him, but he isn’t ready for the bigs.

Cosgrove was activated from the IL and was optioned to EP.

Bit surprised Mauser will be recalled for the start … not that there is anyone else on the 40 man who is positioned (or pitching well enough) to warrant a call-up.

Given the pen’s light workload since the pre-All Star break and with two days off next week .. though a bullpen day would work. 2-3 innings from Morejon, Reynolds, Kolek, et al might have been more effective than Mazur without hurting the pen for SAT-SUN.

Maybe strike lightning in a bottle and Mazur is effective and shows some of the potential that earned him a top 10 Padre prospect status.

One potential outcome of using Mazur is if he pitches well … that may lessen the desire to add a SP at the deadline (combine Mazur with Musgrove / Darvish projections) OR it may showcase Mazur as a trade chip.

Baltimore is a tough opponent so going to be a difficult 3 game set to hold/improve their Wild Card status. Could be an interesting weekend of scoreboard watching and mixing up the Wild Card race.

Consider the Padres are in the 3rd WC slot (5 games over .500 / 50 losses).

Ahead of them are ATL (47 losses) and NYM (48 losses) and they play each other … so Padres could make some ground on one. ATL has been cold and NYM have been hot so that should be a fun series.

Just behind the Padres are STL (49 losses but fewer games played), PITT (50 losses), and AZ (50 losses). PITT and AZ are playing each other … so Padres could make some room against one of them.

A nice weekend for Wild Card race watchers.

Why don’t we give Gabe Mosser a shot?  He’s pitching well in AAA.

Reynolds optioned to EP to make room for Mazur.

Well Mazur is struggling but not yet crushed over 2 innings. Maybe his last ML start for awhile.

With days off next Monday and Thursday and, reportedly, Musgrove potentially going on rehab assignment next week … Padres should be able to navigate with a four man rotation and then fill it out with Musgrove. Plus not discounting a deadline move for a #5 type.

A bigger unknown is Darvish.

Whew! Tough win … but a win!

Ended up a bullpen night.

Neither team looked all that good defensively but Padres survived.

Profar ++++++++

The Padres beat the birds taking game 1 to extend their winning streak to a season high 6 and back to 6 wins over .500. They did it with Mazur on the mound.

For once I have to applaud Shildt for taking Mazur out early in the 3rd inning.  Profar continues to surprise me hitting not one, but two 2-run HR leading the club with 18 HR and Suarez as usual shuts the opposing team down.

Let's take game 2 with King on the mound to take the series.

GO PADRES!

Dodgers lost to Astros. Padres move up a game closer at 6.5 games back.
