Rule 5

Does anyone know the list of players who we need to put on the 40 man or risk losing them in the rule 5?

I know there are a lot this year but I can't find a list.

I'd like to potentially add a number of them to supplement a package for a solid to top of the rotation starter like Fulmer or Syndergaard.

Not as worried about the prospects eligible for Rule 5 being protected as most. Remember the issue is only there if the player is selected and kept ... and a few of the candidates are long shots to cross both hurdles. For the others (could be 5 or more) the current roster is easily cleaned out to accommodate them with FA and some DFAs.

If Szczur is DFA'd today (and Cordoba is returned from the 60 day DL) the roster is at 40 with 3 60 day DL left (Lamet, Dickerson, Cordero) covered by 3 FA after the season (Galvis, Ross, Ellis). I could easily drop 5 end of season roster guys to accommodate 5 prospects (i.e. Guerra, Lopez, Lockett, Mitchell, Hughes, Lyles, Dickerson ... that is 7 and not all that locked in on Brewer or Makita ... so 9 candidates.

Then throw in any trade deadline moves that moves a 40 man roster player (e.g. Hand, Yates, Stammen, Pirela, Spangenberg, et. al) for a non-roster player(s) and the potential open slots are aplenty.

Rather weed out as many of the older players with no (or limited) futures with the Padres and keep all the upside prospects ... that will not be hard.

Did a quick check on "Roster Resource" (can't guarantee accuracy) and they do ID the new Dec, 2018 rule 5 eligibles. Looking at the candidates I took a shot at slotting them based on probability of protection:

Level 1 (as close to a lock as can be) ... 5 .... Urias, A. Allen, Nix, Paddack, Espinosa (although some question of his eligibility)

Level 2 (good candidate but not a lock) .... 4 .... Kennedy, Wingenter, Olivares, Avila

Level 3 (probably falls short ) ..... Gettys, Keel, France, Overstreet, H. Rodriguez, .... there are others with little production to justify consideration.

note that there are still some names that were Rule 5 eligible before ... not selected ... and remain but not really much of a case for their protection.

Of those you listed and which I believe, from present perspective, should not be protected but are at actual risk of being taken are Wingenter and Keel.   Easiest to carry a relief pitcher in a Rule 5 scenario from what I have observed.  Both will probably have a few years of fringe ML play before fading away.

Would not protect the above as well as France, Overstreet, Rodriguez and Avila.  As I may have posted elsewhere, France is growing on me a bit as a potential bench player in a year or two.  Maybe a team will take him with that in mind, but he really doesn't have much upside so why waste a roster spot when UL players are not that hard to find?

Gettys has made some progress and his upside is significant, but you have to squint to see it now.  One more year.

Of course, any of the players in your Level 2 and 3 are available as part of trades of vets if needed.  Level 1 only if its a really compelling deal.

Which Padres on their Top 30 Prospects list will have to be added to the 40-man roster before this year's Rule 5 Draft?
-- Devin O.

There's going to be a roster crunch come November, when players need to be added to the 40-man roster or risk being selected by another club. Recently, San Diego has been on the other side of that dilemma, adding Luis PerdomoAllen CordobaLuis Torrens and Miguel Diaz via the Rule 5 Draft.

This time around, nine Top 30 prospects must be added: second baseman Luis Urias (No. 3), right-hander Anderson Espinoza (No. 7), right-hander Chris Paddack (No. 8), right-hander Jacob Nix (No. 12) outfielder Edward Olivares (No. 18), right-hander Trey Wingenter (No. 19), right-hander Pedro Avila (No. 23), Allen and outfielder Michael Gettys (No. 28).

It's not going to get any easier in the coming years, either, given the Padres' loaded farm system and the influx of talent that arrived internationally and via the Draft in 2016.

From today's DFR ...

Allen Cordoba spent all of 2017 with the Padres as a Rule 5 pick.  Four years removed from that season, and Cordoba is now more of a prototypical third baseman.  His four home runs already put him one off of his career-high, despite only playing in 45 games.  His 13 doubles, including two tonight, raised his OPS to .818.  While Cordoba does not qualify as a prospect, he is still an intriguing player if he can stay healthy and continue to add power.
