Rockies at Padres Gametred

Page 1 of 2Next

Already down 0-1 but never too late to start the Tred and talk padre baseball!

Here's hoping Ross can start the season right and let that lead to a good 175 ip or a trade at the deadline.

Great AB by Renfroe in the 7th to extend the inning and get to Villanueva for his 3rd dinger of the night. Renfroe fought off some good pitches, laid off some close pitches, and took the walk.

Renfroe has looked good (relative) all spring in my eyes. It's Margot we have to worry about.

My problem with Margot is the same as my issue with Spang. They are not power guys, and then they pop a couple and want to hit more. These two need to watch some video of #19, and learn how to hit singles, doubles, and triples on top of learning to take a walk. Not everyone needs to hit 15 HRs a year, get on base and try to steal, use your legs, and maybe score 50-80 times a year.

I know it's early but it's nice to see Renfroe with 3 walks already and ony 3 Ks.

Same thing with Hedges. I wish he would content himself with line drives.

With Hedges, it doesn't bother me as much. Since I am more of an old school 80's Cardinals type line up fan I have this train of thought. Your middle defense guys, 2B, SS, and CF should be your speed OBP type of guys. Your 3B, and LF should be power guys with average defensive skills, and Im fine with an BA between .260 and .280 as long as they are driving over 100 a year. Your 1B andRF should be a combo guy that has a good BA, good OBP, and drive in some runs while also being above average on defense. And finally your catcher, he should be there for working with the pitching staff and defense, and then you really take whatever offense you get as a bonus. So while I would prefer Hedges to be closer to .250 than .200, with his defense and working with the pitchers being above average, I think he is doing OK.

So with the current SD players, I think if Renfroe/Pirela are in LF, they match that St Louis type player. I think we have 1B and hopefully RF covered between Hosmer and Myers. However, none of these guys have a chance to drive in 100 runs, unless Margot, Galvis, and Asuaje start getting on at a better clip. As for now, Galvis and Asuaje are doing great but they need to keep it up all year and that is yet to be seen. Margot is the one that needs to improve, or he is destined to become an 8 hole hitter. And personally, I am done with Headley. Eat the money and cut him, or regulate him to being the pinch hitter. At this point, got to give Villanueva his chance to see what we have. IMO Spangy is a bench player, same problem as Margot, a smaller guy that loves the home run but should be a line drive/speed guy. However, general baseball fans and ESPN wont let these guys be successful anymore. Cant be a ML baseball player unless you hit 25 HRs a year. Ugggh!!!

Hand is all over the place, 3 BB 2 Ks with an error that just killed them in the 9th. Get ready for a long season

Go Pads

Maybe we'll just keep all 400 games the Padres and Rockies play in April in the same thread?

Fun(?) fact: the final six outs of last night's game were all recorded by strikeout. Batters in the ninth inning combined to make contact four times - all foul balls - and each at-bat ended with a swinging strike. None were particularly close.
