RHP Reiss Knehr turned in his best start of the year, working six innings of two-run ball in the first game. The righty hasn’t struck out batters at the rate he did in 2019 with High-A Lake Elsinore but he’s been extremely reliable for the Missions this year. Outside of one poor start on May 9, Knehr has worked at least five innings in each start. The overall results aren’t dominant but he has emerged as a legitimate prospect.

Reiss Knehr gave up a two-run homer in the top of the first, then settled in and held the RockHounds scoreless over the next four frames. The 24-year-old New Yorker matched his season-high with six strikeouts and now sports a 30:16 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 40.2 innings.

The Report: A two-way player at Fordham, Knehr has struggled to consistently throw enough strikes in the pros, but the combination of a high-spin fastball that can regularly scrape 95, and a firm power change with late fade meant he didn’t have to be too fine in the upper minors to be successful. That didn’t work quite as well in the majors, as Knehr’s lively fastball was getting swings-and-misses almost as often as his secondaries—he occasionally throws a cutter and slider as well. Last year, the cutter looked like it might emerge as the above-average secondary, but it was hit about as hard as any pitch in the majors last year. Knehr’s delivery is upright and uptempo with arm effort, so fits best in the pen, but hopefully there will soon be enough command and a right-on-right offering that allows him to throw multiple innings.

OFP: 45 / Utility arm
Variance: Medium. Knehr still needs to iron out the control and command before he’s more than an up and down pen arm option, but the fastball/change combo flashed above-average quality. —Jeffrey Paternostro

Major league ETA: Debuted in 2021

Mark Barry’s Fantasy Take: I think we saw the Padres’ plan for Knehr in 2021, using him occasionally as an opener, but mostly as an option out of the ‘pen. If he gets multiple innings, he could be rosterable in NL-only leagues, but otherwise I’m passing.
