Reggie Lawson

A step forward last night ...

In good development news, the Missions got a positive outing from Reggie Lawson. Lawson, 24, allowed 15 earned runs in his first four starts, which lead to an unsightly 13.50 ERA. However, on Friday, Lawson allowed just one run to an aggressive Arkansas lineup over a season-high four innings pitched. His fastball sat 91-93 and the feel for his breaking ball was spotty, but he was a big part of the Missions victory.

From today's DFR ...

Lawson stifled the Hooks offense over five terrific frames. The Victorville native needed eighty pitches to cover his outing, with the lone blemish being a solo home run in the fourth inning. The victory was Lawson’s first since 2019 as he continues to work back from injury.

81 pitches, 48 for strikes ... gets thru 4.2 IP ... with 9 Ks!  The 2 walks are troubling ... but only 1 hit and 0 runs ... seems like a step forward.

Not to be lost in the offensive onslaught is Reggie Lawson‘s outing. It’s been a winding road for the High Desert native since having Tommy John in 2020. He started just four games last year and struggled mightily out of the gate this season. Despite all the adversity, Lawson pitched well in Wichita, working into the seventh inning. Lawson completed 6.2 innings and allowed just five hits, two walks and a single earned run, striking out six. Lawson last pitched at least six innings since May 2, 2019, when he was a member of the Amarillo Sod Poodles. Still just 24, Lawson could emerge as an interesting storyline this summer.

From today's DFR ...

Thursday has been the regular day for Reggie Lawson, and he has really been giving Missions fans something to look forward to lately, as the righty has now gone seven straight starts without giving up more than one run. Lawson has also now gone 14 innings into July without walking a batter as one of the best stories of the season continues to get better.

With all the upcoming FA SP and possible opt outs (Nick Mart) a rookie minimum $$ SP/BP swing man a la Nick Mart could be a HUGE part of 2023 SDP

Think Lawson has to be added to the 40 man this winter even if he is not envisioned to make the 26 initially. The Padres system is so short on SP who may have near term value his resurgence justifies a longer look.

Not only do they have to worry about the 2022 FA but Snell and Darvish are FA after 2023. So, 2024 it is Gore and four PTNL.

I dont think 2 of  Snell/Wethers and Reiss K will be here by the end of 2022...definetely not in ST 2023...

I also see a top P spec #60-#120 in mlb type spec coming back in a trade for Snell by the deadline... perhaps someone down the line currently in A ball or lower. . So yeah no help in upper minors.. could see a couple of injured FA type minor league deals with ST invites...as well as 4 or so FA SP signings (resignings) at all kinds of $$... from Musgrove (resign) to a possible Eflin type

Why I think Lawson will have a key role be it at AAA or MLB for SDP in 23...

From today's DFR ...

Right-hander Reggie Lawson lasted just 1.2 innings as he battled his command and walked five batters for the second consecutive start. He allowed three earned runs and a pair of hits. Lawson was spectacular in June, pitching to a 1.37 ERA in June. He opened July with arguably the best start of his career – he threw seven innings and allowed just one against Frisco. But over his last two outings, Lawson has walked 10 batters in 4.2 innings. He walked just 11 in 26.1 innings in June.

Reggie must be wearing down? He's not pitched competitively in a while so probably best to shut him down until spring.
