Page 1 of 4Next

Monday, August 12 - 6:40pm
RHP Jake Woodford(0-3, 7.41 ERA, 17 IP, 12 K, .284 BAA) vs RHP Joe Musgrove(3-4, 5.66 ERA, 49.1 IP, 44 K, .240 BAA)

Tuesday, August 13 - 6:40pm
RHP Luis L. Ortiz(5-2 3.40, 90 IP, 68 K, .227 BAA) vs RHP Michael King(2-6, 3.34 ERA, 129.1 IP, 151 K, .217 BAA)

Wednesday, August 14 - 1:10pm
RHP Mitch Keller(10-6, 3.56 ERA, 136.1 IP, 123 K, .247 BAA) vs LHP Martín Pérez(2-5, 4.78 ERA, 96 IP, 76 K, .305 BAA)

The Padres are coming home for a 3-game homestand after not a loss on Sunday, but a great run on the road with a 7-2 record, 7 straight series win, two 7-game win streaks and a 16-4 record since the AS break.

After the homestand, the team will have day off for a much needed rest before heading to Colorado. The Padres enter in this series 3.5 back of the Dodgers and in a second place ties with the Dbacks. Let's hope the Brewers and Rockies help the Padres, who need to do their part.

The Pirates made a game of it last week, but the Padres still beat Gonzales and Ortiz last week. So why not do it again, This time the Padres will facing Keller, who a tough pitcher, for the first time this season. He is coming off a rough outing against the Dodgers surrendering 7 runs on 7 hits in 4 IP.

Musgrove returns for the series. He has not had his best season, but he has a 2.51 ERA in 3 games in May before he went on the IL. His last start he shut down the Yankees allowing only 1 run in 5.1 IP.

King had a rough start in his last start against the Pirates giving up 4 runs(3 ER) and 1 HR. But in his 5 starts before that he has a 1.76 ERA. Let's hope that he plays the Pirates better this time around than he did last week.

Pérez has been a surprise. Despite his 4.78 ERA, he has pitched very well since he was traded to the Padres. In two games with the Padres, he has a 2.08 ERA, 13 K, and a .133 BAA.

NL West Standings and games that matter
Dodgers(69-49) at Brewers(67-50) - The Brewers are a tough team. Let's hope they help the Padres and beat the bums in Milwaukee.
Padres(66-53) vs Pirates(56-61) - They are 3.5 games back
Diamondbacks(66-53) vs Rockies(44-75) - They are 3.5 games back. They have been tough to shake. Let's hope the Rockies can take care if that.
Giants(61-59) vs Braves(61-56) - 8 games back. Would not count them out of the wild card just yet. They are hanging in there.
Rockies (44-75) are done.

Looks like Jake Woodford is starting for the Pirates tonight now. He's 0-3 with a 7.41 ERA in 17 innings split between the White Sox and Pirates this year.

That is even better. Not just because of a pitcher with a higher ERA, but Woodford is a RHP instead of LHP. The Padres have a tougher time hitting lefties.

While I was surprised when Carl Edwards was put on the roster instead of other options, I'm even more surprised that he was DFA'd on a day I thought they might need him for some length in long relief.  Guess he didn't make that much of an impression on Niebla and others.

On the pitcher shuttle between El Paso, my understanding is pitchers optioned down have to stay in the minors for 15 days while position players only have to stay 10 - just like the short term IL for MLB players.  If my understanding is correct, then I have Cosgrove already eligible, Gillespie eligible on 8/16, Jacob on 8/22, Vazquez on 8/23 and Brito on 8/25.  If my understanding is incorrect, then just move everybody up by 5 days.  Darkhorse to be rostered is Omar Cruz for his very good body of work at San Antonio and at El Paso (so far).

Carl Edwards Jr's DFA must be the corresponding move to activate Musgrove.

Also, Jackson Merrill wins NL Player of the Week.

Padres pitching was solid and Musgrove was outstanding his first game back.  Merrill ends the game with an outstanding catch.

Unfortunately, the Dodgers and Dbacks win. At least the Padres did not lose ground.

Let's take game 2 with King in the mound.

GO PADRES!

The team is playing so well right now that they can even win with me in attendance.

My wife and I were there too.  Thought the game was going to end when that grounder went toward Cronenworth but it must have taken a bad hop.  Nail biter all the way for me and that Merrill catch was one of 3 good/great plays he made in CF tonight.  Great athlete pure and simple.

Yeah I was surprised that Cronenworth didn't get an error on that watching it live. It looked a lot tougher on replay. What Merrill is doing as a 21 year old rookie who had only played 46 games at AA and had no CF experience coming into the season is incredible. He's a stud and may still just be scratching the surface of his potential.

It was cool to be there for what I think was the debut of a new entrance for Suarez too. Has he come in like that before? The crowd loved it.

Aug. 12: RHP Yu Darvish working out while on restricted list
The Padres are giving Darvish all the time he needs to deal with a personal family matter while he's away from the team and on the restricted list. But word has filtered back that Darvish has been working out in San Diego, including throwing live batting practice in sessions he organized.
