Padres vs Pirates Game Thread

Page 1 of 2Next

On to Pittsburgh.....So after a 9 game homestand that got the Pads 4 wins they go on the road for 4 in Pittsburgh. 3 with the Nationals and finish with 3 against the Dodgers before coming home

Lauer, Ross and Richard and a TBD ( Lucchesi is out ) vs the Pirates....who gets that start ....Mitchell ?

Can the Pads muster some offense ?

Can the starters go deep in these games to give the bullpen a break on a long road trip ?

Is a 5-5 road trip too much to ask ?

Go Pads !!!

Over/Under on strikeouts for Padre hitters set at 11.

Played well enough to win, but a costly error by Villanueva proved to be the difference.

Doggone it.....I have said it before.... Villanueva is not a 3B

Has some pop but.....

I get it, however I would rather see CV at 3B everyday versus seeing Spangy or Headley there. I can live with some errors for what I believe is the best bat option at this time. I am OVER Spangy!

Is CV really that bad?

Are most of his errors balls that should be played? I never trust the official scorers as they always seem to have an agenda. So just wondering if he's as bad as his numbers show.

And if he is, is Spangenberg any better? Or Asuaje?

I havent seen most of the errors that have been charged to CV, so not sure if it the arm or the glove. If it is the arm, maybe working on his footwork helps the throwing. From the games I have been able to see, Spangy is the better glove at 3B. However, I am over Spangy's lack of bat skills. And Asuaje, is probably a less powerful Spangy. So, when we are starved for offense, just leave CV in there.

Yeah, if CV goes on another tear, which I'm sure he will at some point, the E's won't look so bad.

When is Potts due in SD?

Villanueva vs. Spangenberg vs. Asuaje .... NO GOOD OPTION base on 2018 to date so might as well just keep shuffling them until one starts to actually perform.

Villanueva ... after the hot start to the season has slumped badly but more significantly he may be the worst fielding wise. Seven errors is bad (5 have been fielding and only 2 throwing).

Spangenberg ... after a cold start to the season has remained cold. Also a bad fielder and with a lower range factor than Villanueva but when the stats guys put all the defensive metrics into a WAR calculation does come out ahead of Villanueva ... but still bad.

So, basically neither are hitting or fielding.

Asuaje has not hit all year and has really never played 3B in the ML or MiL making the defensive metric a mystery but not a particularly strong throwing arm and not sure about reaction time for 3B (both significantly different than 2B). No power and is not compensating with a great OBP. Hard to see him an upgrade over the other two bad alternatives.

No real option near term in the minors ... so we suffer until one step out ahead based on performance which suggest everyone needs to play.

========

just checked FANGRAPHS and of the 84 3B (min 10 innings) in 2018, Villanueva ranks defensively at next to last (#83) and Spangenberg is slightly better (#71) ... again support the two shades of bad.

In his defense Spangenberg hasn’t  been given a real opportunity to play regularly this year.

I prefer his speed and athleticism over the others and agree that he has been disappointing....but I also

really wish they would let him play 4-5 Days a week for a period of time.

He wasn’t horrible last year with pretty regular playing time.

Not every player can be successful at the plate starting once or twice a week.
