Game 2 Tuesday September 5th 6:40pm PDT

SD Pedro Avila vs PHI Michael Lorenzen

Game 3 Wednesday September 6th 1:10pm PDT

SD Michael Wacha vs PHI Zack Wheeler

Batting practice is over … R.Hill is out of the game.

In his 6 appearances with the Padres … 19 innings … has been a total bust with a 9.95 ERA / 1.84 WHIP … giving up 30 hits / 8 walks. Plus he was not good in PITT with an ERA around 4.50.

If they have any hope they cannot keep running him out there every fifth start … if they have no hope no point in pitching him over a prospect (e.g. Waldron). Some time before Darvish / Musgrove might return … also too late if they keep losing Hill starts.

I would like to think there was a call up that could even do better but on the 40 man none. Groome is a disaster … Morejon is not stretched out to start … Reynolds in a RP (and is struggling). Non-roster … main options are probably not ready.

Injures just dug them a major hole and don’t see them getting out in 2023.

Why in the name of all things holy did AJ trade Jackson Wolff for Rich Hill ?

I for one would rather see Wolff pitch than this can of gas…he is as bad if not worse than Jake Arrieta…DFA this guy…yesterday

When I saw he was pitching today I realized that the chances of winning 4 games in a row had zero chance of happening

Then again, batting practice resumes with Waldron pitching.

Wolf could not be worse even if he was not a great prospect.

I am beginning to despise being a buyer at the trade deadline.

I already despise trading young controllable pitchers that you need to develop for the future for anybody…especially if the player you got is a FA at the end of the season and someone that isn’t going to move the needle forward…Hill is terrible…DFA this guy now

These guys won’t say it but they know if he’s starting it’s gonna be a long day with very little hope of winning

Do I actually see a little fight in this club? Not rolling over when down? A little too late though!

Desperate man, desperate measures?

Most of us understood that buying at the deadline was the wrong option. Especially trading 4 young arms for....what.....????

Let's see if we can start our first 4 game win streak of the year....today!

On the bright side at least AJ didn’t go all out and trade Merrill or Zavala or another of our top prospects for a better SP and then miss the playoffs.

It seems he just made a few small moves and hoped it was enough…obviously it wasn’t.

But the rest of the team hasn’t done their part either….it’s not like we’re missing the playoffs “because” of Hill or Choi or Cooper.

This is a sign that AJ is gonna hold on to our best young prospects IMO.

Although I’ve mentioned before I would not be shocked if Merrill was traded….just due to position depth etc.

I hope we keep him…..BUT,I could see trading a top SS prospect for a top SP prospect.

Imagine if we had a solid #2 SP at league minimum for 4-5 years at this point.

The Marlins still come to mind

I betting they don’t trade Merrill (or Salas, Lesko, or Snelling) … others maybe. Then not for a SP prospect with a much higher risk of failure / injury … even IF some team has (and would trade) that prospect.

Keep in mind that the current roster needs another bat in the line-up at a minimum … and after 2024 Soto / Kim are FA and will be very very expensive to re-sign … Padres NEED Merrill’s bat now (nothing coming near term in the system) and will need to address offense even with Merrill.

Pitching has Musgrove, Darvish, and probably Wacha for a couple of years and at least have some high profile SP prospects near term: Lesko, Snelling, Bergert, Mazur, Iriate, … not all will develop (but same unknown about any prospect trade target).

Merrill (if in 2024 they keep Soto / Kim), has the inside track for DH / super utility. However in 2025 he could surface as the LF (Soto gone) or INF (Kim gone) or CF (Grisham gone) or remain DH/super utility (since don’t see anyone internally leaping him as a hitter near term).

More likely they trade Soto and / or Kim and their absence will create a lot of options for the use of Merrill.
