Looks like some piggy backing going on after all.

Gore to pitch tonight after Clevinger.

Martinez tomorrow night after Snell.

I like it.

Let’s hope we don’t see Gore or Martinez until the 7th.

😉

Looks like the Phillies think they need Harper more versus the Dodgers than us as he got his shot that will put him out at least 2 games of this series.  This is 100% okay with me!

Here we go again……first two hitters get in the hole watching a first pitch fastball right down the middle.

Do these guys hate fastballs right down the middle or do they prefer hitting down in the count?

I can’t decide which but neither seem a good idea to me.

Such a sweet swing by Grisham there for a wall ball double to drive in Cano.
Need a lot more of that from him.

Clevinger - Gore - Rogers … whew they were good in a hitters park against a team billed as a strong offensive unit (even without Harper).

Saw the post-game interview with Cano … instantly liked him … he was articulate and clearly has that “likeable’ personality. Did not hurt that he had two hits.

Clevinger looked like the elite SP he was in Cleveland … Gore looked like the elite prospect he was billed as …. Rogers looked like the top closer we are looking for.

All is good … for today.

The piggyback could not have gone much better. Clevinger was dominant and probably could have gone another inning or 2 under normal circumstances. Gore was great too and Rogers has been incredible all season. It was definitely a good day.

If they decide to keep the piggyback going then they need to break up Clevinger and Snell . If the duos pitch well then the other 3 games in a row the other RP will not get a rest . Maybe Darvish Clevinger Musgrove ( most likely to go 7 or 8 ) Snell then Manaea . Breaks up the duos and gives a good chance of bullpen rest .

I will be completely honest here, that start yesterday by Clevinger is a huge boost for the chances and confidence of this team deep in the playoffs. I have always been hopeful but skeptical whether or not Clevinger could return to the stud he was when we acquired him. He shoved yesterday and if the Padres handle this rotation/ entire staff the right way, this team is Tatis and maybe one more bat away from being a world series team. Snell returning and pitching the way he did the second half would make for an even more ridiculous rotation. Basically the complete opposite of last season's team.

Also, is this the Robinson Cano we are going to see? Very encouraging seeing him get two hits.

This showing to open the series is very very encouraging.

Doubt this piggyback plan goes too much longer. Once Clevinger has got a few games under his belt expect him to be going the 6-7 inning route. Snell ... well given his history ... he may need that piggyback since he rarely goes beyond 5 innings but guessing that Melvin will be pushing him to go deeper into games.

More likely Melvin goes with a 6 man rotation once the number of consecutive games builds up over the next  6 weeks or so keeping everyone's innings down and the 7th "SP" becomes that long man for every starter who may have an off game. Going to be hard to keep Gore out of the starting rotation ... so probably Martinez gets the long reliever role / spot starter.

Will be interesting to see which way Melvin goes (a lot will depend on the pitchers performance) but he does prefer a 5 man starting rotation and does prefer to run his starters deep in games. When faced with potential 7 SP who can go deep ... and pitch well ... something has to give.

The 7 pitchers will probably sort it out with one (or more) faltering / getting injured ... hope not. However, if the Padres get to mid-July with this abundance of effective pitchers AND are still struggling offensively ... the set-up for a trade.
