Padres vs Cubs Game Thread
Quote from 3fingersplit on September 10, 2019, 2:14 pmSo the Cubs come into town and treat our Padres rather rudely in the first game of the four game series to finish off this homestand
Tonight we get to see Bolanos again and personally I liked what I saw from his first MLB effort for San Diego. It would be nice to see how he does against a very good Cubs team that may very well get one of the Wild Card spots if they don't catch the Cards. Anytime you get to see a young starting pitcher go against a team that has something to play for it can be a possible glimpse of the future for this rotation as you then have Paddack followed by Lamet to finish the series.
With all of the question marks with this team going forward ie; OF/CF, Catcher and maybe 2B.....the young starting rotation could be very fun to watch for years to come. I have mentioned this before but if they developed into a Braves type rotation that had Smoltz ( Paddack ) , Glavine ( Gore ), Avery (Lauer/Luchessi/Morejon) and then add in a top of the rotation type starter Maddux ( Richard, Lamet, Bolanos, Quatrill or Patino...this could be special and would make the Padres a contender for a few years but somebody would have to make the move to be the top of the rotation
That doesn't make up for the inconsistent offense but at least you know that every day you had a starter that could PITCH
Some of these guys just don't hit enough and even if they are a defensive gem the Mendoza line should at least be the very minimum....Hedges, Jankowski, Urais etc
Hopefully they can score some tonight and support Bolanos
Go Pads !!!!!

Quote from JasonE135 on September 10, 2019, 2:53 pmBolanos surprised me this year. His stuff has looked better than expected and he has shown he can compete at this level. Of course, it has only been 1 start so far, but I all looking forward to the additional talent added to our overflowing starting pitching competition. Looks like we will have enough for an excellent rotation and a full bullpen as well! We do not need a C or a 2B. We have catchers coming out of our ears. Campusano will be a top 50 prospect by the start of next year. Mejia can hit very well and he gives us average defense and a cannon arm. What more could we want? Urias will eventually take the 2B job. Most players don't hit when they first get to the majors. Urias will hit. CF is our only real need and we have Taylor Trammell on the way. Have patience!

A nice hang with em game. Didnt like seeing the RP falter, but they didnt give up against a playoff caliber team.

And I'm still a Luis Torrens fan ... he'll be at AAA next year ... valuable!
