Padres Vs Cardinals Game Thread
Quote from 3fingersplit on May 10, 2018, 6:21 pmSo after taking 1 out of 3 against the Nationals, the Pads get the central leading Cardinals for a four game set....
Jordan Lyles gets the start in place of Bryan Mitchell......he couldn't be much worse could he ?
Can the Padres get the bats going ?
Has the league figured out the holes in Villanuevas' swing ?
Can they win this series ?
Can Andy Green get these guys going in the same direction ?
Lots of questions.......
Go Pads !!!

I know that Villanueva is in a slump, but Headley is atrocious. He should never bat in a SD uniform again. Cordero is getting on base with walks and singles, but is he sacrificing the power too much in exchange, or is it just part of the learning curve and will soon be able to combine both and finally give SD a solid position player, especially via the farm system?

Is Villanueva in a slump or is this closer to the real Villanueva once ML pitchers find his weaknesses? The 2018 Ryan Schimpf? Agree that Headley is on his last legs but hard to make the call when he is released given Villanueva's woes. Add Spangenberg in the discussion ... hitting in AAA but striking out a lot in AAA and did not hit in ML. Given that troika's poor play ... difficult to make a call on the odd man out this soon.
Not worried about Cordero's power ... that is some natural strength. Guessing the Padres are trying to get him to establish a more controlled swing (less violent, more contact, less holes) to improve the OBP and then let the power come naturally off a solid base of more contact. We are still in a very small window of ABs ... better analysis about July.

Quote from Booster SD on May 11, 2018, 4:59 pmWith no great 3B in the near future, and my utter disdain for both Headley and Spangy, I am willing to see if Villanueva can figure it out. I would bet that Villanueva finishes this season than Spangy has for his entire career to this point. And even though CV has 6 errors this season, Spangy is not that much better to accommodate for his pathetic bat. So since CV only has 108 ABs so far this season, I will call it a slump for now, and give him until the ASG break to see how he can really bat in ML.

Quote from Commie on May 11, 2018, 5:24 pmI would like AJP to consider acquiring a 3B via trade at the latest during the offseason. Sure the team can roll with what they have now and Potts is likely a couple years out, but next season and the following they cannot have a black hole at 3B if current options disappoint. Any near ready 3B options you guys can think of who might be available in a swap for someone like Quantrill or similar?
90% kidding, but I think I recall some thought of Myers moving to 3B...

Well, he has played 15 games/122 innings in MiL at 3B. However, that is not a huge history at that position. His is probably as athletic as anyone on the field, but this might be a big ask for some one at his age. I would guess the biggest question; since we know he can field fairly well at 1B, is can he make the throws. But with that question, would he be that much worse defensively than CV? And would the bat be worth the chance. It would also clear up the OF spots, allowing SD to potentially keep Cordero, Margot, Renfroe, Jank, and maybe Szczur . Or if they can get an enticing offer on both Jank and Szczur, then maybe Franmil Reyes can have a shot at LF, and Cordero mans RF.

Quote from fenn68 on May 11, 2018, 6:00 pmIn the short run (before the trade deadline), would think Headley gets released and they platoon Villanueva (trouble with RHP) and Spangenberg (trouble with LHP) and neither can field. MAYBE they get a 3B (ML ready) for Ross at the trade deadline but more than likely if they get a 3B it will still be a prospect. Hard to guess the value of Ross (FA after the season) and a team that really would need him.
Best chance for a 3B upgrade is in the winter with a trade (not a bevy of near term ML quality 3B in the upper minors) and unlikely to deal any major Padre prospect for one. Chance they dip into FA for a short term fix and wait for Potts or if they draft a college 3B.
More than likely a modest deal for a decent 3B to hold for 2019 ... maybe 2020. Some options.
3B will be an issue in 2019 with no good resolve that I can see. (that may be also said for catcher whether Hedges is around or not).

Losing is hard enough.......losing with ZERO offense is just hard to watch.
This season is making even me want to stop watching!

Quote from 3fingersplit on May 11, 2018, 9:24 pmI said it 3 weeks ago....Villanueva is not the answer and once teams got some tape on him.......this is the result
I get so tired of seeing all of the ex padres on teams that come into town and they kill it....the guy playing 3B for the Cardinals........yeah , we had him.....the SS for the Nationals....had him too... but at least we have a good farm system 😉
