Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2024, 9:02 amWell apparently the Padres are not moving up Musgrove to SAT (4 days rest), so the TBD could be a bullpen day (Brito, Morejon, Kolek, et al) but that might weaken the pen for the next few games … unless on goes deep even if shelled.
Alternately a call-up. Took a Quick look at who would be schedule to go on SAT with normal rest … none of our prime prospects fall in line. So, a bit of a quandary.
Don’t know what is going on with Watson down in EP … pulled last SUN after one inning … but he has been very effective in his starts (except one). Non-roster RHP who was once a top prospect (KC?) but injured a lot … now 27. If added to the 40 man could be optioned. He seems to be the option that is on schedule and half way effective in EP … unless he is injured.

Bergert is scheduled for Saturday (he last threw on the 13th). I thought he looked pretty good in ST and figured he'd be near the top of the list of guys who might be able to step in for a spot start.
EDIT
Vasquez last went on the 13th, as well. Tomorrow El Paso is TBD, so maybe he's getting the call.
I could also see them rolling Brito out for a few innings. I'd prefer seeing Bergert get a crack to either of these scenarios, but whatever. It does look like there are options.

Somehow I missed him … he may be the first in line.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 19, 2024, 1:29 pmLove to see Bergert....he's 24 and has more minor league innings than Snelling/Lesko/Mazur.
Most likely they don't want to bring him up and send right back down?

Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2024, 1:57 pmMaybe later in the season if they need a SP for an extended run (and usually that happens). Might be a toss up with Mazur though who has been lights out too.
Does seem like Vasquez … helps he is on the 40 man.
I am interested in seeing who the real Vasquez is … did not impress in ST or in EP but consider he is a breaking ball pitcher with high spin rates EP is not ideal. Looking at his minor league career and his 2023 with NYY … he has been an effective.
Last season in 5 starts and ERA about 2.50 low BAA/WHIP. Even his 6 relief appearance were fine with a ERA in the 3s. So can pitch well in the ML.
My guess it will come down to Vasquez’ command … if he has it his stuff will play.

Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2024, 6:30 pmOK, like Merrill even more now.
Yesterday, on the off day, he went up to Lake Elsinore to watch the Storm game and see some of the guys he had been with in ST and trained with last season.
Looks like a real “team” player.

How long is a 50% K rate allowed at the MLB level?
And since I'm not seeing the games, can anyone shed light on Bogaerts AB's please? Is he hitting the ball hard? Is he swinging at strikes? NEVER considered him a leadoff hitter in my wildest imagination. What is it that Preller and Schildty see in him?
