Padres at (???) Seattle

Pads delayed their flight up by a day with the off day in hand due to the Air quality in Seattle...

MLB is contemplating moving the series to San Diego, which would obviously be awesome for Pads.  Guessing that decision would have to come down pretty soon to allow Seattle time to make sudden arrangements to get to San Diego.  SF did play @ Seattle  yesterday, and scheduled day game in Seattle today, so may just be leaving it up to Seattle if they're willing to trade the home games/make the trip for better air quality?  This season is really something else.

At the moment, Seattle is 133 "Unhealthy", San Diego is 54 "Poor".  San Francisco has improved dramatically to 35 "Fair", but they were bad very recently, likely precluding Seattle playing there.

"I" still "win" near Portland, OR 219 "Very Unhealthy" which is way better than the 300-400+ "Hazardous" range it's been in for almost a week...

Aha!   Here's a clue with the Mejia timing.  The first 2 games vs. Seattle are LH SP, so...

I would look for Mejia to start both of those games at C, with Nola starting @ 1B since Hosmer not back.

Pham (if activated) or Ona DH.  Once the SP comes out, maybe Moreland in @ 1B, Nola/Castro to C, Mejia out or to DH*

Favorable matchups we haven't been able to do in a while!

*Can someone post the DH rules?  Can the DH switch to/from a field position during a game at Manager's discretion?  Due to injury?  Is there some "special" rule about DH/C vs other positions?

I believe MLB moved both those games out of Seattle and to SF ... listed for SF on the MLB site.

Very, very good chance that the weekend series comes to SD ... zero point in taking any health risk un in Seattle. Guessing that there are hotel rooms available.

Think you nailed it. RHH in the line-up .... ABs for both Mejia and Pham on their returns ... and some catching reps for Mejia in game competition while "resting" Nola at 1B.

You're right.  ESPN hadn't updated "who @ who"... but Seattle played as Home Team, SF as visitor.

Since Seattle's "already made the trip" from Seattle to San Fran, it would actually be LESS travel for them to just come to SD, and do the same thing:  they play as "Home" team bat last, we're "Visitor"... but we're not changing dugouts!  (Obviously... Covid!)

If I am MLB, I am sending SEA to SD for the weekend.

  1. go to SEA and both teams have to travel ... go to SD and only SEA has to travel (less risk)
  2. (for purely mercenary reasons) having only SEA travel and take the risk is irrelevant since they are not going to the playoffs so willing to sacrifice them BUT protecting the playoff bound (and second best NL team) SD for better TV ratings is prudent.

With two LH pitchers scheduled for Seattle, a good time for Pham to be activated.  Lucchesi or Ona probably be sent down.

Think tomorrow we may see both Pham and Hosmer activated ... so a good chance both Ona and Lucchesi are sent to the alternate site. That's nine games to get their bats into playoff shape.

Padres drop to 14 pitchers ... but with the off days next week ... probably not a big issue especially with Richards slated for bullpen duty.

YES!!!   Where this really helps Padres (besides NOT having to make longest road trip of season) is it buys a little time with player health/readiness evaluations.   It's not insignificant that, instead of having to make 1 more road trip before the playoff quarantine bubble kicks in; picking  a 5-man Taxi squad PLUS guys being during the series, etc...  Can now just keep practices/rehabs going with max # of players at the Alt site until the last minute.  Way easier to activate someone the the 2nd or 3rd game or react to an unexpected injury now.
