While a trade of Juan Soto is appearing very likely, a source said that Jake Cronenworth is also a potential trade possibility for the Padres.

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2023, 8:02 amQuote from Notmyopic on December 6, 2023, 7:33 amI would think Preller would like to have Snelling and Thorpe in AA all season, they should both be MLB ready for 2024 and that would give them the depth to trade a Mazur or Berger for a one year rental in Bieber.
Just don't think Bieber would cost a Mazur or Bergert ... not given his injury history (and last season) on a $15MM contract. Maybe more the Lizzaraga plus based deal.
Given the attrition rate and less than elite development rates of SP ... think Preller will want to hold on to Thorpe, Snelling, Iriate, Bergert, and Mazur expecting in 2024 one or more (just don't know who) will be need (to avoid adding the next Rich Hill) plus the bullpen is lacking and Iriate, Bergert, and Mazur have at various times been projected as RP.
Either Bieber or Burnes would be good but only if the cost in players fit ... other options are still out there ... and that is a judgement call.

The plot thickens.
Not likely part of the Soto deal but maybe a deal for another SP? Seattle with a need and a lot of pitching ... SD and SEA do make deals. MILW maybe since they have some INF needs? Long shot could be MIA who want to keep Chisholm in CF and add to the INF (maybe have to shift some to SS) and need a 2B?

Quote from Randy Manese on December 6, 2023, 8:24 amAlthough now in the background, in about 3 hours the Rule 5 draft will occur. Wouldn't mind Padres reuniting with 2 possible RP candidates, Luarbert Arias and Cole Wilcox. Wilcox would be more of a project but Arias might be very close. Today is the last chance for Preller to make a splash at 2023 Winter Meetings, so hang on!

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2023, 8:33 amIf the Padres add King ... deal Cronenworth to SEA or MIA for a league minimum (or close) SP with control ... conceivable they can avoid adding a Bieber / Burnes type ... gamble on the sea of high level prospects to support the #5 SP and the pen ... then put the avoided salary money of offense ...
Hard to know what SD really projects in Merrill, Marsee, and Pauley near term but moving Croney could set up an extension of Kim and Bogaerts to 2B (or 1B if Merrill is the future) while saving some 2024 money and a future bump ... probably enough to cover the increase on Kim' extension. More money for Lee as the future CF, Sanchez as the #2 catcher, and ??????
Side: probably not in 2024 but might we see a trade down the road of Suarez (and his long contract) if Iriate, Bergert, Mazur develop as RP ... plus probably some unknown to us internal surprises. Cash is cash and have to remember that the salaries of Machado and Tatis will start really start jumping in the coming years.

Quote from fenn68 on December 6, 2023, 8:44 amIf Curry is correct (YES Network) ... and likely the Padres get King and Thorpe ... he suggest maybe 2 or 3 other players going to SD. That could go a lot of ways.
First if NYY are giving up King and Thorpe ... really doubt the also send Schmidt or Hampton since they still need to preserve a pitching staff even if they do sign Yamamoto. Also, if they land Soto and with Verdugo on one year deals ... hard to see one of the Top 100 OF included.
So, might we see what I suggested before and Preller go for high ceiling prospects in the lower levels to fill out the trade ... not clog up the 40 man and with a lot of AA arms already no need to gild the lily. At least land one high ceiling future guy.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 6, 2023, 8:57 amWith the idea of a Kim extension, and still trying to make up for the error of Preller in signing Bogaerts. I would like to see the following trade. I know some of you will dislike this trade, but I think it could benefit both teams.
Burnes and Yelich for Bogaerts, some prospects, and some cash.
I know, I know....Yelich. However, if you look at his numbers he is returning to who he was prior to that devastating knee injury. He is owed $136.5M including buyout over the next 5 years. And Bogaerts is owed $254M. This would open up SS for an extension for Kim, help land Lee since they could be teammates for a longer time, and Merrill could slide to 2B. Plus Yelich even last season was back to his .280 BA and .370 OBP.
I know it wont happen, but I still think it would benefit both teams, as Bogaerts could easily slide to 3B for MIL.

Probably will not be ... but I could live with an INF in 2025 (or sooner) of Machado - Kim - Merrill - Bogaerts for the next 6 years if Merrill is anywhere near his projection. Rolling in the young (low cost) pitching prospects and a lot of money is left after a Kim extension for Lee and some other bats if Marsee and Pauley don't develop.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 6, 2023, 9:37 amAccording to MLBTR and Morosi it appears a deal is close to being finalized for Soto. King, Thorpe and at least two other players.
It will be sad and exciting to see what plays out. And nice to see the other pieces fall into place.
