We will find out soon as the national guys (Feinsand and Morosi) seem to be indicating that something will happen soon ... the report from Japan is that he has already had his physical and contract terms were in place.

Apparently SF is actively seeking a trade for a SS per MLBTradeRumors today.
Kim for prospects? Clear $7MM AAV ... buy a FA corner OF with that added to the money still available after signing Matsui (if they do)?
OR modify the earlier idea of MILW dealing Adames to TB/MIA or now SF for prospects and the Padres trade Kim to MILW for Burnes. MILW keeps a top SS ,,, gets low cost prospects and drops Burnes salary (with Adames move save just under $20MM). Padres get that TOR SP (for 1 year) at a net plus $8MMish. Bogaerts - Cronenworth man the middle INF.

If AJ spends $10 mil per for a middle reliever that will tell us a few things.
He either has a plan in place to add a LF/1B/DH via trade or our concerns over money aren't as bad as we believe.
You would think middle relief would be the least of our worries right now.
Also, maybe AJ is fine with Yu/Joe/King and expects to fill the rotation from a group including Vasquez/Thorpe/Avila/Waldron/Iriarte/Bergert.
Point being...if we spend $10 mil on middle relief AJ obviously has plans for our other needs and it proves the reports of our financial demise have been greatly exaggerated.

10M a year on Matsui would be a luxury we can't afford; more likely somewhere around half that amount with opt out after 1st year. Also, no posting fee involved with Matsui, so save money there. Wouldn't get too excited about getting him but he is experienced in high leverage situations, so that should transfer - 7th or 8th inning, but probably not a preferred closer option. We'll find out soon.

Looked a MLBTradeRumors Top 50 FA ... Matsui was #43 and they estimated 2 year / $8MM AAV but be warned they have been consistently low with their projections.
Fangraphs had him at #28 at that 3 years / $10MM AAV.
So the player is not without merit ... not convinced on the need / cost for the Padres ... BUT maybe the Padres' scouting sees him more than a middle RP since he was a closer (and successful) in Japan. Clearly after trading Kerr and Morejon cannot be relied upon to be healthy ... needed a legit LHRP to join Cosgrove.

Yes adding to this earlier comment it may also tell us that they think he's a bargain at the expected cost.
Is he?
Who knows.....as Fenn said we may be looking for a legit LH arm to replace Hader even if in a set up or 7th inning role.

The signing is official, and then a follow up trade of Suarez to STL for one of their OFers? Maybe, hope!

The Padres lost a whole lot of close(1-2 runs) and extra-inning games last year. It was a major problem that Matsui will help with.

Actually that works on a couple of levels … do know that STL is pursuing a RP and does have some interesting young bats … so can be a fit.
IF the Padres see Matsui as the closer (remember that Suarez had not proven to be a closer) and maybe Brito (and Wilson) may be seen as end of the game options … Suarez and his high cost / long term deal can be expendable.
STL has “excess” bats. Pretty sure STL would want to move Carlson (switch hitter) and WAS a top prospect but has not been all the good at the ML level. Padres may push for Donavan (LHH 2B/OF) who has hit well in the ML. Compromise might be Burleson (LHH OF/1B) who is still more a prospect but upside. None are expected to start as STL will go in the OF with Nootbaar, Edman, and Walker … Gorman at 2B … Goldschmidt at 1B.
All three options are low cost / long control so fit the Padres … a question as to STL taking the full Suarez contract and then giving the best of that trio.
If that player out … Suarez ends up paying for Matsui … and the commitment is probably shorter.
