Well...it was a great season for about 80 games.....then more of the same after that.

Just getting Tatis back next year will be a huge boost.

What else is gonna happen before next April?

90 games... 45-45

Key dates (from Padres' website)

4) When do the Padres need to trim their roster?

Five days after the World Series all players who have been placed on the 60-day injured will be removed from that list. The Padres finished the season with a full 40-man roster, plus 11 players on the 60-day IL. That means even if Stammen, Warren and Loup leave, they will have 48 players on board. That number needs to be trimmed to 40.

8) What is the Deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft?

Certain Minor Leaguers who haven't been added to a 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft during the Winter Meetings. If those players are selected by another team, they must remain in the Major Leagues for an entire season or be offered back to their original club.

The deadline for prospects to be added to the 40-man roster -- thereby becoming protected from the Rule 5 Draft -- is Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. PT.

========

So, Preller needs to make some moves sooner than later to clear what looks like 8 players by 5 days after the World Series then maybe another two weeks of "fine tuning" to deal with any Rule 5 protects he envisions. Give or take ... 30 days.

Corey Dickerson (left bat) is around a 3+ WAR when playing a full season ..is a FA and only had 260 BAs in 2019 so should be an affordable piece and upgrade COF for us...

Of all the names being toss around ... I would guess C. Dickerson has the best odds of landing with the Padres.

Beyond the fit of being a LHH OF who actually can hit .... he comes as a FA without a QO. So, it is money out while preserving trade chips to deploy for further bolstering the OF or SP.

Not cheap ... 30 (so not old) ... shortened 2019 due to broken foot so not a reflection of declining performance from strong 2017-18. He was at $8.5MM in 2019 .... so probably in that same zone gets it done but likely on a 2 year deal (maybe with club option). A 2.5-3.0 WAR is in his history ... so immediately the best / proven Padre OF.

======

Since I don't think Benintendi will be dealt by the Red Sox (no matter how much logic is used suggest good deals for the Red Sox) ... I would make the push for Marte (PITT, 2 years control) if the Padres could handle his $11.5MM plus whatever they pay Dickerson. Dickerson in LF - Marte in CF - then RF becomes a sort among the non-traded incumbents of Myers, Renfroe, Naylor. Margot (if not traded) makes a useful 4th OF for all positions based on defensive versatility.

Getting 2 year stability from 2.5+ WAR players (plus the best of the incumbents) allows ... but does not block ... the development and "easy ML landing" for the internal prospects of Trammell, Olivares, and Cordero.

Although I think adding a top SP is important ... probably OK with waiting a year unless a great deal is available now ... maybe putting too much on the future of Gore and Patino hitting the same success path as Paddack ... but the potential of sitting in 2021 with Paddack, Lamet, Gore, Patino, Lauer / Lucchesi / Quantrill ... all very low cost ... could be very good while leaving payroll space for the OF adds and the potential arbitration / extension pressure coming soon for Paddack / Tatis.

Of course, Dickerson has to agree and PITT has to be willing to reasonably deal ... neither a guarantee. That is why the winter should be interesting ... the unpredictable (correctly).

I've advocated for Dickerson several times...so obviously would like to see him in Brown(love to say that).

However....signing Dickerson,or any free agent, only adds to our roster situation.

We obviously have to make other deals or just flat out release about 10 players.

Trade for Marte. You have to wonder with the comments made by Fowler, could SD send cash and the right mix of players to PIT to include Myers in the deal. Fowler said that they would include up to $10M per year to rid themselves of Myers. So at $12.5M, would PIT be interested in Myers? About the same salary as Marte, "can" play all 3 OF spots like Marte, and I believe that PIT is more of a hitters park, that with a change of scenery might just be what Myers needs to get back on track. MLBTR suggests that one of PITs needs is at catcher.

Marte for Myers, Hedges, Luchessi or Lauer, 1 very good MiL player on the 40 man(maybe), and $30M in cash.

Good chance they can deal some marginal pieces as needed as they move down to the better players who remain on the 40 man ... and for a Dickerson level add ... they clearly will. Maybe they do get that bigger deal for someone that ends up 2 or 3 for 1 ... but not absolutely necessary ... a roster player for a non-roster prospect works.

Padres are at 51 ... my initial drop list (without trades) to get to 40 is:

  1. Stammen ... Free Agent
  2. Warren ... buyout
  3. Loup ... buyout
  4. Erlin ... ineffective in last control year and in arbitration
  5. Jankowski ... ineffective with no minor league options and in arbitration
  6. Kennedy ... missing in action and should clear waivers and return to the minors as non-roster
  7. Edwards ... showed nothing
  8. Stock ... 30 and showing no signs of gaining consistent control
  9. Kinsler ... eat the contract bypassed by Urias and France
  10. Mejias-Green ... career minor leaguer replaceable while Tatis is returning
  11. Martini ... career minor league replaceable

In my mind ... like some but none are clear ML talents and not much of a future ... need emergency fill in 2020 ... look to Miller, Quiroz in the INF ... Cordero, Trammell, Olivares in the OF. Arms ... Padres have a lot still rostered and a lot of as good or better non-rostered in AA/AAA in 2020.

That still leaves me the option of moving on from Yardley or Avila without much angst. This is also the point when finding a minor deal for the likes of Allen or Nix (not huge futures) will fit in. Then don't forget the 60 day DL will create some 2020 openings as the season moves on.

The only one on that list of 11 Fenn that you suggests that doesnt sit well with me is Jank. I get your points, I still think he could make a fine platoon with Margot in CF. Always bat them both in the 8 spot and they can steal 2B, and then the P can bunt them to 3rd.

I would rather jettison Avila or Yardley in favor of keeping Jank. I think a new manager can get something out of him.

I really like Dickerson. The man hit .300/.370. That and Tatis would be the best averages on the team BY FAR! And he is quite cheap and would only need a short contract? Sign the highly effective cheap guy, use our bullets for 1 major trade. Like you fenn I am not worried about the 40-man.
