NEW CBA NEGOTIATIONS

PreviousPage 2 of 2

Hard to game out the optimum strategy for teams / players in signing new deals, opts outs, etc. With the expectation of a work stoppage on Dec 1 (halting all player moves, signings) then the unknown of when the seasons begins (and players sign and get paid). New rules potentially impact completion for players (e.g. salary floor creates more demand then higher salaries, stricter penalties for exceeding CBT may lower top line salaries, limits on deferrals, limits on contract lengths, etc are all on the table. Most will not get approved ... but what does and how does that impact an individual deal ??????????????

All the if/then scenarios might just make teams / players freeze in place during NOV and opt for a mad scramble once the new CBA is signed.

I agree that 99% or more teams/players currently on the 40 man will likely freeze in place, unless they really want to stay with their current team and the team really wants them at their expected price.  For the Padres, I believe this might happen with two of our key players - Adrian Morejon and Ty France.  Both have a deep connection with the Padres and San Diego and as long as the new owners present a deal that they judge as fair within their current and future parameters, they will re-sign with San Diego.  Expect both to land 3 year deals with easy to reach incentives (post the unpredictable but almost certainly shortened 2027 season).

I agree there may be a Padre push to re-sign both Morejon and France before Dec 1 ... I would add buying out King's options with an extension could well be a strategy. I expect all three will be much more expensive than I would have thought 3-4 months ago.

Given the returning controlled players ... and if these three are signed before Dec 1 ... Preller can approach 2027 as he did 2026 with what appears to be low cost "filler" options ... and given all the lower end / mid-range FA needing to sign quickly after the new CBA is approved or not get paid for 2027 he should have a lot to pick from selling in part a "consistent playoff team" to showcase their talents on one year deals to set up their next FA runs.

Side: if the lockout last to July ... 2 week ST ... the regular season ... would expect a number of quick, lower salary, one year deals since teams need players and players (and their wives) need paychecks so not a lot of room to "hold out and negotiate" ... more of a 2o27 of "survival" for both teams and players.

During the lockout there is no player movement until the new CBA and then potentially a rapid period of FA signings and trades.

Wonder how much the GM will discuss (and agree upon) trades during the lockout ... then announce them as soon as the CBA is approved. If trying to build a roster that hits the season running ... and not waiting to rely on FA that might be able to be signed ... makes some sense.

Preller does not have much to work with ... but with the need for catchers in MLB maybe one of Campusano, Fermin, or Salas could yield a return that could fill in the ML roster blanks as at least an upgrade.
