Javy Guerra

100mph ... from the stretch!

Pitching is hard ... and it's interesting to see what this newbie is doing ... how much he has to learn ... that pitching is more than velocity ...

Rooting for him ... and he is still a long shot ...

Guerra won’t be going anywhere.

With that kind of movement at 100 mph the skies the limit.

He just needs to refine his craft.

Imagine if he had a plus change up!

Calling Darren Balsley!

I know I have written on another thread that I think he will have trouble making next years team but I am really rooting for him to have a nice career , hopefully with us. Last night he looked completely different and had real good control. With our bullpen in shambles we really need him to keep it up.

I miss Balsley, he always seemed to piece together a good bullpen out of thin air. I don't blame Rothschild just miss Darren.

I know it is primarily the quality of the pitchers but interesting reversal of fortune in pitching consistent with the switch from Balsley to Rothchild (noting also small sample size):

SP, 2017-19 ranked 26th in MLB WAR .... 2020 5th

RP, 2017-19 ranked 7th in MLB WAR .... 2020 26th

Might have something to do with Lamet, Davies, Paddack, and Richards from the get go. Lack of a Yates / Hand type anchoring the pen.

Baseball is a bit of a "whack a mole" game ... pound one problem down and another one pops up ... that's baseball.

I don't meant to speculate on Guerra's "personal reasons" for going to IL.  With everything going on in USA/World, there could be an awful lot of reasons.  But it just popped into my head... was it Javy who struggled with some Depression?  Or am I thinking of someone else.  Not Khalil Greene (extreme anxiety); another Padres player more recently...

I know Javy was definitely affected mentally by being kind of beaten down as a position player @ SS watching a star get "born" and blowing past him at SS, but this was more than that...  I just can't remember.

Whatever the reason is, I really hope he & his loved ones are all OK... these are not easy times.

Yeh, I think it was Guerra back in 2016 when in LE when the report that his IL stint was due to depression. Doubt it had anything to do with any other player .... maybe just his struggles hitting ... maybe something internal.

He has not had the success in 2020 hoped for in the pen ... and is not getting used much .... so maybe that is a trigger.

Probably should not try to connect the dots in situations like this when we really don’t know.

Agree.  Just hope it's not that, but whatever the reason, hope he's getting professional help he needs.  Just the sheer isolation aspect of 2020 is tougher mental health wise than most admit!

Personal reasons could cover a wide range of issues, but I do know that he hadn't pitched in over a week and a half prior to going on the IL and I don't recall him even warming up in that stretch.  I also believe that he wasn't going to get into too many games going forward and most likely not on our playoff roster, so for me it's just like a late COVID opt out.  That leaves Williams and Stammen at the back of the pen and Williams can still be sent down if we want to start bringing up some of the position players on IL.  Guerra has great potential but still needs more innings under his belt to get consistency.  He did have a 1.00 WHIP in Sept (his last two games) but too many balls were finding the holes.  I don't think overall he was hit that hard - but he definitely needs to locate his pitches better, maybe dialing back from 100 will help in that respect.  I look forward to seeing him in spring training and see how it goes from there.

Brian, you say you don't want to speculate . . . and then you speculate. I really don't want this site to turn into a gossip forum.
