Giants at Padres Game Thread

Well that was a bummer...not the start to the home-stand I was hoping to see
Mitchell hasn't looked good all spring....5 walks in 3 innings tonight
3B is still a problem.....Villanueva is not the answer
Hedges is flirting with a .160 ba....defense will only keep you in the lineup so long
1 hit tonight....by a pinch hitter that is a pitcher
That was just an all around ugly game but the nice thing about baseball is that the Pads get a chance again tomorrow
Fingers crossed that Tyson Ross can have a solid outing and they can scratch a few hits into runs

This game was beyond ugly. Stratton was leaving 89-91 mph fastballs over the middle of the plate all night long and all we could do was swing right through them. On top of that, the umpire was also calling an atrocious zone. Every time I looked up he was either calling an obvious strike a ball for the Padres or an obvious ball a strike for the Giants.
I will say, though, that calling 3B a problem after 13ish games is silly. Let Villanueva play. If we're in August and the guy is still batting .200 with a ton of strike outs, then yeah, he's probably not the answer. But if we were gonna pass judgment on players after less than 1/10th of the season, guys like Paul Goldschmidt or JD Martinez must be washed up, right?
Point is, give these guys (Villanueva included) an adequate sample size before passing judgment.

Since I have no faith in Villanueva (turning 27 in June) - Spangenberg (about the same age) - Headley (33) being the 3B of the future (maybe even by the end of the season) ... not really worried about getting any of them playing time. The current problem is there is no near term option for playing that 3B of the future ... not going to yank up any real prospect who is not ML ready just to fill the spot.
So far all three options have been really bad ... but very limited exposure. Will they all get more time under the same in-out of the line-up strategy ... at least of another month or so ... likely.
Because of his LHH and versatility ... think Spangenberg is "safe" on the 25 man roster making a debate at some point between Villanueva and Headley. That may come to a head when Margot and Myers come off the DL and (expect in a month or so) Urias to be called up. Sure could send down Cordero - Asuaje and release Szczur but as likely to make the Villanueva - Headley call instead of one of those other moves so someone needs to start producing.
For the future (2020) the Padres may be best served by extending Galvis (2-3 years) and making the move of Tatis to 3B (Potts ... if he develops ... may not be a factor until 2021).

This offense is pathetic!
Slow dribblers in the infield are all we can muster off this soft tosser.

Tyson Ross threw a great game and actually had a hit....Padres get the win but the bad news is that Dinelson Lamet is done for the year........Tommy John Surgery
I said it when he came out of the game that this was not good despite all the reports it was a flexor strain....makes Mitchell a must step up kind of guy now

Thank goodness the offense picked up a bit or would have spoiled a good outing by Ross.
Anyone else think(especially after the Lamet news) that we should try to extend Ross now?
If we wait it could get much more expensive.

Is there a reason Hosmer is not playing?
Cause Headley should NOT be on the field unless there’s an injury and even then....it should be someone else.
When Margot comes back we need to just release Headley and move on.
Villanueva can play 3B and Spangy can backup 2nd and 3rd.
What do we need Headley for?
He can not hit.

Lower back tightness for Hosmer.
I agree on Headley. Let him go. He's wasting space on the roster and not contributing at all with the bat.

Headley is a great guy and all, but this isn't working. Hope Mitchell picks it up or that trade will be a real bust.
