LHP Tyler Holton(5-1, 2.22 ERA, 60 K, .183 BAA) vs RHP Joe Musgrove(4-4, 4.44 ERA, 63 K, .268 BAA)Wednesday, Sept 4 - 6:40pm
RHP Keider Montero(4-6, 5.17 ERA, 58 K, .264 BAA) vs RHP Yu Darvish(4-3, 3.20 ERA, 53 K, .216 BAA)Thursday, Sept 5 - 5:40pm
RHP Casey Mize(2-6, 4.36 ERA, 62 K, .289 BAA) vs LHP Martín Pérez(4-5, 4.71 ERA, 91 K, .293 BAA)The Padres enter the final month and the final stretch of the regular season beginning with a 6-game homestand starting with the Tigers and a rare Tuesday off that is much needed after an 18-game stretch. They will play on the west coast for the remainder of the regular season, which is nice. In 2023, the Padres went 20-7 from September thru October 1. The Padres will miss facing Skubal.
Musgrove is coming off a bit of a rough start allowing 3 runs, but has pitched better at Petco than on the road. In two home starts at Petco since his return form the IL, he has not allowed a run.
Darvish returns. Good to have him back. It looks like King's turn in the rotation is skipped.
Pérez is coming off a rough start allowing 4 runs in 5 IP, but has pitched better at home. Since joining the Padres, he a 2.75 ERA in 4 starts at Petco. The Padres have 23 games left and only 4 times in franchise history have the Padres reached at least 90 wins and they will have a good chance to finish with the second best record in franchise history. The following is what they will need to accomplish to reach a milestone:
• To finish with 100 wins, they would have to go 22-1. Not likely.
• To finish with 98 wins (record set by 1998 Padres, NL West and NLCS champs), they would have to go 20-3. Odds would be against them, but not impossible.
• To finish with 95 wins, they will have to go 17-6. There is a good chance.
• To finish with 92 wins (1984 Padre, NLCS Champs), they would have to go 14-9. There is really good chance of that.
• To finish with 91 wins (1996 Padres, NL West Champs), they have to go 13-10. There is a really good chance of that.
• To finish with 90 wins (2010 Padres, did not make playoffs), they have to go 12-11. Excellent chance. In my opinion, the Padres have the least toughest schedule, but not by much, because they play the White Sox, the worst team in MLB and will have less travel than the Dodgers and Dbacks because the Padres will be playing on the west coast for the remainder of the season.
Here is a look at the 3 NL West team schedules for the remainder of the season:
Padres: vs Tigers, vs Giants, at Mariners, at Giants, vs Astros, vs White Sox, at Dodgers, at Dbacks
Dodgers: at Angels, vs Guardians, vs Cubs, at Braves, at Marlins, vs Rockies, vs Padres, at Rockies

Quote from 84padres on September 2, 2024, 5:42 amGoing to miss Skubal ( 16-4 , 2.51 ERA ) which is a big break for us . Det has been playing much better lately , 18 -11 since Aug 1st . They are going with a lot of just called up rookies and the biggest dead weight in MLB Javy Baez is out for the season .

Quote from Randy Manese on September 2, 2024, 11:26 amMy vote is Johnson from the active and Azocar from the 40 man (DFA'd). Rostering Lockridge was the sign that Azocar's time on the 40 man was running out.

Agree ... plus Azocar is out of minor league options for 2025 and likely would not even get tendered a deal over the winter to open that 40 man slot.
Not sure the rules here but is it possible they can activate J. Brito (0n the EP IL) and immediately move him to the 60 day IL for the 40 man slot? Does little except preserve some position player insurance for the rest of the month unless they see Brito returning to health quickly and he provides some pitching insurance.

Quote from fenn68 on September 2, 2024, 2:41 pmTatis is starting in RF ... batting 2nd.
Profar is getting the day off (Peralta in LF) ... Profar looked like he really needed some down time, so today and tomorrow's off day is just the ticket. Even better that is at home in SD.
When Profar returns to the line-up on Wed ... will be interesting where they place him in the batting order under the assumption Tatis remains batting 2nd. Have to keep Profar's high OBP near the top of the order in my mind.

You called it right. Also, Kolek was transferred t0 the 60-day IL. Profar and Cronenworth get the day off.

Acee rumor is Darvish will start WED … we will see.
That would give the other starters a bit more rest between starts and get Darvish a bit more ML work before the playoffs.

Outstanding pitching by Musgrove and the BP. This is Musgrove's 3rd shutout in 5 starts since he returned from the IL.
The Padres remain 5 games back of the Dodgers, who won, but move a game ahead of the Dbacks, and in sole possession of 2nd place. Also, they have moved into the top wild card spot.
