Dave Winfield
Quote from hoffy51 on September 4, 2018, 10:53 amI have been a Padre fan since 1970 when I moved to San Diego from Whittier, Ca.
I have gone to games and seen the Trevor Hoffman statue. Beautiful. Classy, just like the Tony Gwynn statue. But I fee like we need a Dave Winfield statue. Yes, he left and signed with the Yankees. But he CHOSE to go into the HALL OF FAME AS A PADRE. He didn't have to. He is our first date. Our first love (as far as the hall of fame goes).
The Padres have not been wildly successful over the years. When I go see the Giants play at AT&T (or whatever they're calling it this year), they have Willie Mays, Juan Marashal, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, ets. Cardinals the same. etc. It seems to me that we need to celebrate all the success we've had, and a guy in the hall of fame certainly qualifies for that. I don't know why Dave Winfield does not have a statue. But for whatever the reason, someone needs to get over it. For me, having a guy in the hall of fame and not having a statue is embarrassing. What do you think?

Quote from Booster SD on September 4, 2018, 10:57 amIMO, SD paid him to go into the HOF as a Padre by making him a VP of whatever he was prior to his induction. IMO he would have not go into the Hall as a Padre if they had not done this. He would have gone in as a Yankee or a Twin.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 4, 2018, 1:19 pmStatues are forever.......I don't think Winfield warrants his own statue at Petco.
He is more in the same regard as Garvey and even Ozzie IMO.
Great player who was briefly a Padre.
I think the statue is more about "the Padre" rather than his whole body of work.

Quote from sportwarrior on September 4, 2018, 1:41 pmI mean, 8 seasons is hardly "briefly," but I agree that he doesn't merit a statue. I don't think we'll see another one of those for at least 20 years.

Ouch ... you used the "G-word" 🙁 That guy made A LOT of outs for the Padres ... and got one big hit ... chaps my hide to see #6 on the OF wall ... that's a mistake to learn from ... in my ideal world, the "6" is replaced by "1984" ... I can/will remember Mr G as a part of that wonderful team ... but Mr G is, and always will be, a stinkin' Dodger 🙂
