The Padres are coming off a disappointing series lsong 2 fo 3 to the Reds and dropping to 3 games back of the Dodgers. Now they will play the Rockies, who have the worst record in MLB, for the last time this season at Petco. This time they will not have to face Freeland, who shut them down last Friday. It is good to have King back, who is coming off a solid outing in his first game back. The Padres offense needs to step it up and produce.
Dodgers head to San Francisco to battle the Giants, who are hot winning 13 of their last 17 games and are only 2 games from a wild card spot.

Padres win and move up a 1/2 game on the Dodgers, who did not play today.
Vasquez was outstanding tonight pitching 6 shutout inning, 9 K and allowing only 4 hits.
Kudos to Merrill on his HR.
Let's win tomorrow.

Pitching rotation for the Padres has changed. JP Sears will be pitching game 2 on Friday pushing back Cease, Darvish and King to open the Mets series in New York. This is to give the pitchers an extra days rest.
I hope Sears steps it up and on top of his game. I like the idea of King pitching in the Mets series followed by Pivetta.

That might be the best Vasquez has looked all year. His stuff looked really good. He set a new career high with 9 Ks and didn't walk anybody. Just a really strong effort.

He’s been very valuable this year….who would have thought he’d be more competitive than Dylan Cease in a walk year?

Vasquez has been under appreciated all season ... in 25 games he really has had only 3 real clunkers ...otherwise he went 5-6 innings with 3 runs or less. Maybe not "pretty" with his lack of command / strikeouts but that performance should set up wins if the team hit behind him. A season 3.72 ERA (123.1 innings) is well above expectations for a pitcher who many did not think he could even be a #5 SP.
Preller was right in getting him from the NYY ... always liked the "stuff" and it has been a development arc in with command. Only 26, at league minimum, 5 more years of control ... really fits as a long time Padres SP maybe as a mid to bottom rotation arm on a contender ... but that is valuable for stability / quality in a rotation.

Those Rockies have really nice pitching, allowed only 2 runs last night, 1 run through 4 tonight, 🤦
