1. Almonte was "optioned" per the transactions on Sept 16th (no further word on him opting out or being released).
2. Adams was "reported" as being activated on Sept 20th (listed on 40 man but not showing up under transactions). I had him on the 45 day IL (from an old report) and should have required an offsetting move.
3. Yates was put on the 45 day on Sept 20th (that has been reported in transactions).

So would on the surface seem as a switch of Adams for Yates between the 40 man roster and the 45 day IL.

So, what is confusing, if Almonte "opted out" or was released and not counted on the 40 man ... no need to put Yates of the 45 IL plus (based on the old rules as I recall) can't put a player on the 45 day IL unless the 40 man is full and need to add a player the to 40 man. Since Yates was moved to the 45 day IL ... "implies" that Almonte was still on the 40 man (at least on Sept 20). Behind all this is the unknown whether MLB needs to pre-approve these transactions (and how long that may take).

So, if Almonte is on the 40 man ... it is at 40. If Almonte is not counted as part of the 40 man ... it is at 39 and room to add Castillo from the 45 day IL.

Immaterial in the big picture ... just curiosity.

First on offense, you have your normal starting 8 + Moreland, Profar, Castro, and Garcia.  Thats 12.  I would guess you keep Mateo for speed (13).  With Pham and Hosmer healthy, I dont really see more than those players playing.  Could the Padres take a defensive specialist like Allen?

For relievers, need to make sure Allen and Strahm are healthy.  Thinking about it, its game 1, 2 outs in the 5th inning.  Padres are up 3-1, but Lamet has walked the bases loaded.  Who do you TRUST to come in to close out the inning?  Who do you TRUST to throw the 6th and 7th?  (Assuming Pom and Rosenthal in 8/9).  If Strahm doesnt pitch until the playoffs would you trust him?  Adams?  Hill?  Morejon?  Altavilla? Johnson?  Pagan?

It should be Strahm and Pagan, but both have been injured and Strahm, in particular, needs some work in these last 6 games.  Johnson has been the one Tingler seems to turn to lately and I think they have faith in their other lefties - Hill and Morejon - depending upon the match-ups.  Got to see if Adams has his control, so he needs a lot of work/exposure, to make it worthwhile to bring him in.  I'm not that comfortable with Altavilla and hold my breath every time Stammen is brought in because he can throw gasoline on the fire.  However, don't forget about Richards and possibly Paddack, in a short series.  Either one could be solid in that role and Richards has been tested so far and did okay, despite giving up a HR.

The poor "Transactions" update guy/s have their hands full this year!   On 9/28:

• Javy Guerra  & Luis Campusano were activated off the IL
• All players including Almonte who were on 40-man but not 28-man were Recalled  EXCEPT:
• ...players who had been optioned less than 10 days ago.  These were:  Perdomo 9/19, Mejia 9/19, Patino 9/20 (he came up/down for the doubleheader vs SF on 9/25; but don't think that "counts"), and Lucchesi 9/22.  So @ 8:37 AM PST these 4 guys are shown as being only guys on 40-man in "Minors"

Takeaways:

• It must have been error removing Almonte from 40-man roster; looks like he's been there all along.  This means the 40-man roster is full.  Affects "add Gore" speculation, though seems like Almonte would just be the likely DFA if it happened.
• Guerra & Campusano re-instatement means there are 40 "healthy" (incl Lamet & Clevinger) players on the 40-man roster.  This would seem to leave no room for non-roster Gore or Weathers?  BUT perhaps they are allowed UNTIL the 4 players still technically in "Minors" are eligible for recall?  The "40-man" quarantine started a week before the season ended, so Gore & Weathers (?) likely were part of that group, but technically the optioned guys may NOT have been?  Or were there physically, but not eligible to be on MLB field/practice/dugout?   Hard to sort out the intersection of COVID safety protocol & existing MLB rules.
• U/T story about the cardboard cutout of Yates in dugout means apparently even the near healthy Yates & Jose Castillo can't be with the team in the quarantine bubble due to the strict 40-man limitation; and they are technically not a part of 40-man roster since on 45-day IL.
• Since it's 9/30 now; Perdomo, Mejia, & Patino SHOULD be eligible by 10-day minimum option rules to also be "Recalled".
• IF the 10-day minimum option DOES carry over into postseason (?!?!) it would mean that Lucchesi can't be on the 1st round playoff roster, since he wouldn't be eligible to be recalled until 10/2.  Does anyone know about this?  I don't have much experience following playoff teams!  🙂

Did not hear about any additional changes to the 12-man playoff pool besides the moves to/from the NLDS roster (I had speculated maybe Lucchesi "up" to playoff pool).  So that 12-man pool seems like it might be "set in stone"; having more to do with the strict playoff quarantine bubble protocol (ex. Kirby Yates not allowed to travel with team, since not in the playoff pool), than with MLB transactional rules such as when Lucchesi was able to be recalled (maybe that influenced the decision, maybe not).

The only healthy players on 40-man not in the playoff pool are:  Lucchesi, Javy Guerra, and David Bednar

The only players remaining in 12 man playoff pool NOT on 40-man are: Gore, Webster Rivas, AND technically Jose Castillo who was never activated from the 60-day IL, despite being included.

The add of Weathers to the 40 man is just another indication that the Padres are more interested in winning with the best options available than any of the cost / control issues . He not only takes a future roster spot from someone else but does that 2 years before he had to be protected. 2021 will eat his first minor league option year (assuming he is optioned).

Also shows the Padres really like him so we may see him in regular season play sooner than anticipated ... which should have some ripple effect on the rest of the 40 man.
