30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters

Not confirmed but looks as though the Padres have added two insurance policies to the 60 man:

1. Camarena ... LHSP ... 27 .... no ML experience and not all that effective in the minors primarily as a SP ... maybe the fact that he is LH and Padres may see something in him as a RP?

2. Yacabonis ... RHRP ... 28 .... was a good minor league RP a few years back ... converted to a SP but was not effective over the last two seasons (even after going back to RP) in the ML .... maybe the Padres think he can return to his RP form and he did do well in ST as I recall.

Insurance for a disaster scenario and the space on the 60 was there ... some protection from getting into a situation where they need to add one of the prospects that they do not want to (Wilcox, Weathers, Cantillo) and prematurely start their clocks and next year their option count.

Confirmed plus they added Almonte for OF depth. 55 on the 60 ... so still room to maneuver.

If we get down to Camarena or Yacabonis being on the MLB 26 man, we will be in big trouble.  My guess is that these are  experienced arms that are being brought in to eat up practice innings for the taxi squad, so that the more likely replacements like Baez and Morejon don't get over-extended and some of the younger hitters get to see pitchers beyond HS plus talent.  Agree that Almonte might sneak in there but you'd have to have a major injury or complete bust in the outfield before he moves ahead of Olivares or Naylor or even Mejia or Profar.  From what I've seen, Trammell still needs some work on his pitch recognition and timing so don't think he's there yet; I wouldn't want to waste a control year on this 60 game schedule.  I really like Marcano which makes me wonder whether Abrams can still be in the CF mix way down the road; both put the ball in play and rarely strikeout.  I hope Tatis shows he can stay at SS by improving his consistency and judgment, so we can have these possibilities in the future; still a possibility he outgrows the position.  Don't think Arias is the answer yet at ss - he really needed this year in AA for offensive development.

Agree that the adding of Camarena and Yacabonis is more for running the alternate site in a way that doesn’t overwork the pitchers while giving the hitters consistent ABs than adding the two for ML potential. If (when) injuries start to mount up and the Baez, Morejon, et  al get the ML call ... still need pitchers at the alternate site to keep it going productively.

Almonte may be different. Padres could shuffle INF to the OF if a couple of OF/INF go down ... that just diminishes the options at other positions. As it stands, if Mateo is out, likely the initial 30 will only have one 40 man roster position player inactive (Torrens) ... then a collection of not ready for the ML prospects that would not be good either for a team that wants to contend or their control / future. Almonte may not be all that exciting but he has ML experience, is a switch-hitter, and can play all three OF slots ... right now better alternative than any of the other inactive options.

Almonte is probably only two position player injuries from being on the ML roster. Not prepared to see Trammell, Hassell, Head in the ML in 2020.

I agree Trammell isn't ready, but you can't group him with 2 teenagers!   He 's almost 23 & has to be protected this offseason.  With so much uncertainty this season, and 40-man now wide open, would not be surprised at all if he's selected & we see him in 2020.

Hope I don’t see that surprise ... would mean there were an inordinate number of injuries and the Padres are out of contention.

Doubt either Almonte or Trammell get the call in this 60 game schedule. Probably need 4 position player injuries to exhaust the roster options (will cause some position shifts). Plus the active roster holds at 26 in September.

???  If 1 of the 5 O.D. OF goes down AT LEAST until the 30-man drops to 28, if not all season, 1 of these guys would get selected & come up.  I get we have a lot of INF, esp with Mateo still TBD, but normal team, normal AL 162 game season would carry 5 OF all year.  Almonte had a great ST I, and Trammell clearly outperformed Cordero.  I agree TT "should" be in AA right now, but no can do.  Don't write these guys off as off the cliff talent dropoffs!

Maybe I am adding wrong but is that projection only 29? (15 position players, 14 pitchers).

IF Mateo is healthy and has to be on the roster .... still see Cronenworth on the roster in the initial 30 since Mateo may be able to PR and go in defensively but without reps hitting since ??? not a PH or spot starter option. Better Cronenworth comes in if Tatis "tweaks" something that keeps him out a day or two than Mateo in the first two weeks.

I think both Lucchesi and Quantrill are listed as starters because they are in competition for the 5th slot .... plus Tingler has danced around that suggesting that depending on the match-up either one could start and the other work out of the pen one day and then the opposite mix another.

Not sure how the other arms are working in Summer Camp .... but would start the season with Baez and Perdomo on the 30 when the team is playing everyday and pitchers are still settling in at the expense of keeping Trammell and Mateo/Cronenworth (if Mateo out). Greater chance the team will need (and use) extra pitchers in the first 15 days than the extra position players.

Does this make the Padres' 60 better than the Mets' 60?

The Mets have struck minor-league deals with outfielder Juan Lagares and infielder Brian Dozier, according to reports from Deesha Thosar of the New York Post (Twitter link) and MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Both will join the 60-man player pool.

Mets are favored to win the NL East and have a solid everyday line-up to do it.  Beyond deGrom, they are hoping that their starting pitchers keeps them close so that line-up can do damage.  Experienced depth may be a concern so see why Lagares and Dozier may be important to them.   Padres, on the other hand, are not in the same boat.  They need to see what they have with some of the younger players and some of their recent acquisitions as we approach the key years 2021-2025.

Depth-wise Padres 60 is potentially better than Mets 60, but right now Mets 30 is superior to Padres 30.

As Richards, Profar, Yates, Pham, etc. become FA and the salaries of Myers and Hosmer go down or away in 2023, need to be ready to invest in the young players (Tatis/Paddack/Lamet) and/or sign key free agents like Lindor or make a big trade for another experienced  top of the line SP arm or bat.  Interesting days ahead.  We could even re-sign potential free agents Anthony Rizzo or Trea Turner, if they still possess productive skill sets!  Wouldn't that be a novel move!
