2027 Padres Season

PreviousPage 8 of 8

Morejon will be interesting. Mainly guess that the QO was offered with the knowledge that Morejon will not accept a 1 year ($23MM) deal when he can get a multi-year guaranteed contract to protect vs injury / regression.

I do think some team will offer Morejon a 3-4 year deal at a strong AAV and without the need to make incentives. 5 years for a RP (even at 28) seems long.

Padres might not want to go to that level for Morejon. First, we don't know how much they want to increase the payroll and IF they have SP, France as the priority that is where they drop the bucks. Second, longer team deals with RP are maybe considered riskier for the player to continue to produce at a. high level. Third, Padres have a history of finding quality RP out of nowhere and they may just take the view that they can more easily cover the loss of Morejon setting up Miller than dealing with holes in the SP.

Sequence of signings may have an impact. IF they have a reasonable firm level of budget increase ... and they initially pursue the SP/France BUT get rebuffed by some of their targets ... might at that point shift targets and may make the bigger move on Morejon (but a risk Morejon will have already signed elsewhere).

Somewhat an art of reading the room on ability to sign anyone at the Padres' price and quickly move off that target if they believe that can't. Need adds and can't get hung up pursing any one target and lose out on the alternatives that will not wait.

Padres added LHSP prospect ... Luis Gutierrez ... to the 40 man roster. Probably to avoid him being declared a minor league FA.

The more I think about it, the more it seems Morejon may be pricing himself out of the San Diego Padres.  If we are now talking about 20 million plus for a high leverage set-up RP, that seems an awful lot when you might be able to get a decent mid-rotation SP with that kind of money.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Morejon back, however, for that kind of money need to allocate toward King and France and another SP and/or another OF.

Further, while Morejon has had only minor discomfort in his shoulder and arm these last couple of years, he does have a previous injury history.  Investing 20+ million for the next 3 years in Morejon, therefore, seems a risk that Preller and Padres ownership might not be willing to bear.  The short term decision could be do we trade Mason Miller for a huge package and go with Morejon as our closer or do we pass on Morejon (unless he lowers his demands) and use that money elsewhere?

On Nov 2 some minor league housekeeping ... players on the IL were activated to minor league rosters and 6 year minor leaguers declared FA.

The only surprise to me was that Jagger Haynes declared FA ... given the state of Padres SP (and he was a Top 30 prospect) would have expected him to be added to the 40 man (like Gutierrez). Of course still may re-sign him to a new minor league deal.

I see a very slim (or no) chance of resigning Morejon. He will get a big contract from someone. The Padres must prioritize their spending on SP ... probably 3 established SP.

I have to stick with Miller for now. Three control years via ARB ... guessing that will total around $40MM (biggest chunk in the last year) and arguable the best closer in the league. Even being optimistic Miller may yield a couple of very good prospect and a mid-rotation arm ... but that really will not fill the 2027 holes or save too much payroll (Miller expected around $8MM).

However, there is a "slim" chance to re-sign Morejon as the back-up plan (if he is still around) IF in trying to sign 3 SP the Padres find they cannot sign the quality arms (money or just prefer other teams) and don's want to spend big money on "inferior" arms ... go to Morejon who would (may) provide more value to the entire pitching staff out of the pen than adding the next Casey Mize.

I assumed all along we were gonna lose Morejon,
if we had four quality starters in the rotation, maybe, but we’ve got to start there and sign France
