2026 San Diego Padres Season
Quote from Randy Manese on March 10, 2026, 9:56 amWith a little over 2 weeks before opening day at PETCO, thought I'd make a guess at the Padres' opening day roster.
We have 3 tough teams to open the season, so I think we need to have Adam and Buehler on the pitching staff with Marinaccio the odd man out and all our pitchers with options sent down and several placed on the injured list. Adam will give us those high leverage spots against these teams, while Buehler will be available for multiple innings should any of our SPs falter early. Darvish and Brito are not listed because both are already "out".
SP - Pivetta, King, Musgrove, Vasquez, Marquez (IL-Canning, Waldron) RP - Miller, Morejon, Estrada, Adam, Morgan, Peralta, Hart, Buehler (IL-Matsui, Hoeing)
C - Fermin, Campusano
INF - Machado, Bogaerts, Cronenworth, Sheets, Castellanos, France (IL-Song)
OF - Tatis Jr., Merrill, Laureano, Andujar, Johnson
Despite not having Cease, Suarez and Arraez, if healthy, this team should be just as competitive and capable of winning 90 games or more. A lot will depend on bounce-back seasons from the SPs and solid seasons from the position players that are close to their expected projected numbers. GO PADRES!!!

Quote from fenn68 on March 10, 2026, 10:50 amSounds about right with the caveat of how long Matsui and Song are on the IL ... if only 15 / 10 days that might alter who makes the roster to start the season.
Say Song is on the IL for only 10 days ... activated and someone has to be dropped ... France would have to be put on waivers and likely would get claimed given his ST performance. In those 10 days at the start of the season unlikely anyone but Sheets / Andujar / Castellanos get playing time at 1B/DH and Manny - Bogaerts - Croney will play full time. Are the better off leaving France in AAA (unless he has an opt out) and fill Song's slot with a middle INF that can be optioned (McCoy)?
With a couple more ST starts ... still a toss-up on Buehler vs Marquez as the 5th SP. If one ends up long relief ... out of options Marinaccio is DFA (traded). He would get claimed I think. From a season long perspective ... is retaining Marinaccio better than one of those SP candidates (especially with Canning returning late April/May)? Hart (who has pitched well in ST) could handle the long relief role ... setting up a different decision when Matsui returns.
Plus with two weeks, Preller can make trades and we might see more injuries.
No 40 man roster issue with being at 39 now and can put Darvish and probably Hoeing on the 60 day when needed. Then at some point, Waldron come off the IL and is DFA.
