2025-26 Offseason thread

Just for roster consideration the Padres are at 39 (could be 38 if they need to put Darvish on the 60 day IL) ... so in reality have 2 open slots on the 40 man.

However, if we look at the "out of option" bubble guys for the 26 man ... more flexibility. Out of option guys likely to make the 26 man are Campusano and Johnson for position players and Vasquez for SP.  Two are longer shots to make the 26 man so likely DFA ... Waldron and Marinaccio ... so thinking four slots to work with but unlikely to find four new 40 man adds unless a trade that includes multiple 40 man adds (unlikely). So, a lot of flexibility now and going through the season. Could make for an "easy" add of a Padre prospect (non-roster) mid-season if needed. Not even considering some marginal players who could be DFA if needed and there are quite a few.

Especially if SD lands another SP and with the injuries to King and Musgrove, I wonder if SD should consider a 6 man rotation. Would give additional rest to both King and Musgrove, and allow for the top three to be rested going into the playoffs.

I know Mr P. has liked the idea for years, this might be the season to try??

Rengifo at 3.5m to the Brewers. Solid add. Felt like maybe he could have been another super versatile option for our bench. Dude even has enough reps at SS to be considered a subpar-but-viable backup.

Would have been a tough sign by the Padres ... primarily because he would not get much playing time given the INF and Song on the bench. He would opt for any team that allows him more to build for the next FA run.

Probably not a fixed 6 man ... off days / rainouts would really stretch out the time between starts and that often does not benefit the pitchers.

More likely a considered insert of a 6th starter in long game stretches or just to have an arm fully skip a start (giving a full 9 day rest). That allows for Niebla / Stammen and the pitcher assess when the extra rest is needed ... basically a case by case basis.

Either case would suggest keeping at least one SP/Long RP out of the last eight. If Pivetta - King - Musgrove - Vasquez - Sears are the starting 5 ... may need to keep one of Hart - McKenzie - Gonzales - Waldron (maybe Hoeing) unless they add an arm better.

Have to assume that no team is trading a quality (low cost) SP to the Padres for what the Padres have as trade chips. However, one gambit is to deal for a legit AAA prospect to sit in the minors to start the season and get the call-up when they want those extra starts. A RP like Estrada might get that done.

Different mixes to start the season ... mid-season ... stretch run.

I can see some contending teams with SP depth in the minors (ready to be promoted very soon) find out during ST that because of injury or underperformance that their bullpens are not as strong as they need.  That would be the ideal time for the Padres to part with a RP while they still have many options from which to choose to fill behind the player traded.  I hope it happens before I get to Peoria on 15 March for a week so I see the "new addition".

As I suspected Gallen re-signs with AZ.

Looks as though no other team wanted to take the risk at his asking price and forfeit the draft pick. Signed for the QO amount of $22.5MM with a bunch deferred ... one year.

Only Littell and Giolito are the FA SP remaining out there.  Can AJP land one (or both) of them on a (or a couple) of creative, opt out deals?  Let's hope so.  Go Pads!

One of the Padres fan insta accounts seems to think Griffin Canning is set to go to the Padres. Haven't heard it literally anywhere else, but like I said earlier in the off-season, I think he'd be a solid add at the right price. If petco and niebla can suppress his home run tendencies like they did Pivetta, he could be a stud once he's healthy.

Apparently he worked out for teams a few days ago. I guess he had to show he is recovered from an Achilles tendon injury last June.

Depends on the contract but could be a decent sign as competition for the #5 slot. His "stuff" has appeal but has a history of injuries and a career below average ERA (except for April of 2025) probably is putting most teams off him.

Mets last season modified his pitch mix and added a knuckle curve (just as a show me option) and backed off a bit on FB usage. Apparently his FB, although in the 94MPH zone, is hittable if not located well. His other offerings are pretty good.

His 2025 Mets deal was around $4.6MM and 2026 projections were for a "prove it" contract in the $5MM range maybe with a club option for 2027. Given his history ... not sure the Padres would go that high. Maybe more like a $1MM base with incentives and a 2027 buyout of $3MMish. At this point in the off-season would not be surprised if he signs a minor league deal with an invite to camp and a bump up if he makes the 26 man.

Does not seem as though there is a lot of interest from other teams ... maybe the Mets ... maybe the Cards.
