Quote from BoosterSD on February 9, 2026, 7:55 amBOS has just made a trade with MIL for Durbin, a 3B/2B so they are fairly overloaded with INFers. I wonder if Preller is trying to work out something there to assist with 1B? Would Casas be in play, and if so, a good fit for SD at 1B?

Probably not now ... he is a LHH 1B/DH with (despited his injuries) still a lot of upside (so would cost a lot in trade assets). With Sheets (L), Andujar, Song (L) in the 1B/DH rotation adding another LHH not the top priority.
Preller is likely focusing on using limited assets on a SP and if he goes for another bat probably a RHH as a platoon option to the three above.
At one point thought Casas would be a good trade target (3 years control and now less than $2MM salary). Plus with Boston's offensive line-up, Casas may not get much playing time for at least two years (maybe even AAA) ... so expect Boston would entertain a trade.

Quote from fenn68 on February 9, 2026, 8:47 amBoston - SD trade is possible ... just on the pitching side (my view only).
Padres have a deep bullpen ... Boston as a notable need for bullpen depth at the ML level.
Boston has strong ML starting rotation that is going to push some of their "better" SP prospects (with some ML experience) to AAA ... Padres need SP depth for that bottom of the rotation (or mid-season call-up).
Seems as though that is a potential match of needs and excesses. Both Boston and San Diego are pushing to win in 2026 ... so may want to upgrade the roster from the surpluses. Note Boston has two better prospects ticketed for AAA might be OK with trading one.
I will leave it up to the GMs to match values on the pieces ... but the concept is there.

Quote from fenn68 on February 10, 2026, 11:03 amWe all always want further upgrades but need to appreciate the improvements already made. Sure the returnees can be worse or better but looking at the outs vs in ... much better (on paper). Consider:
Catcher: Out Diaz (wRC+ 74) / Maldonado (wRC+61) ... In a full season of Fermin (wRC+ 77 and way better defense) plus at least offensively Campusano's career wRC+ is above all of them.
1B/DH/LF (in some rotation): Out O'Hearn (112 but only 183 AB); Arraez (104 in 675 AB); Lockridge (49 in 95 AB); Heyward (38 in 95 AB); Gonzales (38 in 61 AB); Brooks (26 in 43 AB); Gurriel (3 in 40 AB); Joe (-63 in 10 AB) ... run all those together and that is way below an average for 2 of the three positions. IN for a full season: LF Laureano (138) and Andujar (125) combined with a returning Sheets is a big upgrade.
Bench: OUT: Iglesias (73 in 343AB); Wade (69 in 127 AB). IN: TBD with Song; Wagner; McCoy; and Johnson in play ... so here an unknown but guessing a push depending on SONG.
Bottom line is a full season out of Laureano, Andujar, and Fermin is way better than the dear departed collective (and that includes the loss of Arraez).

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 10, 2026, 12:26 pmIt's hard to believe the reports that we were not only in on Goldschmidt but also on Framber Valdez and now Zac Gallen?
Last year we thought we had no money to spend and then we signed Pivetta.
Now we thought we had no money to spend and we signed King and we are still in on other FA Starters?
It's almost like we aren't "broke".

I find it hard to believe that we are in on Gallen since he rejected a QO and it would not only cost SD money but a draft pick as well.
I do think he is poised for a bounce back season though!

With Gallen they would lose 2 draft picks and $1MM in international bonus money ... plus unlikely they could outbid BALT if the price stays up or be selected by Gallen if AZ wants him back at the SD price.
Hard to see Padres paying what it would take to land Gallen ... hoping his poor 2025 was a one off when the top of the rotation is headlined by Pivetta, King, and Musgrove ... nice IF he rebounds but dumb if he does not rebound.

Preller is "in" or "interested in" almost everyone ... just should not assume anywhere near the contract level the players are receiving.
Sure a Pivetta type contract would work for the Padres (minimal 2026 then a bump in 2027) but not apparently working for the players. Now if anyone of any quality is still around late in ST ... the player may panic go drop to the Padres offer structure ... but not now if there are any other options.

Quote from Commie on February 10, 2026, 3:09 pmBumping my Castellonos prediction. PHI pays all but $1 mil in exchange for a downside prospect pitcher.
Think Preller (who is not being extended until new ownership I believe) is waiting on ST cast offs for pitching depth rotation.
Hope I'm wrong on both counts. Eg I thought Ozuna would cost half what PIT paid.

Thinking for a SP ... a trade is the most probable at this point if Preller wants a reliable middle/ bottom of the rotation arm (not expecting a upper/middle level with payroll limits and limited trade chips) ... that is OK with me. Ideally, the SP is low cost / long control but beggars can't really be choosers in this market. The remaining FA SP market is a mix of thin and over priced.
A couple of months ago thought Castellanos would be a Preller pick-up for as you suggest something with PHIL taking most of the salary (will have to eat all the salary if DFA) and a nondescript prospect. Now, after the signing of Andujar, maybe not as interested in a RHH limited defensive part-time player vs LHP (and given Castellanos' attitude with PHIL management of his usage ... not sure he would be a happy camper as a part-time player). Add that TOR lost Santander for most of the season ... maybe a motivated competitor for him.
