Quote from fenn68 on February 2, 2026, 2:55 pmOut of the Spring Fest last weekend ... a couple of notes:
- Sheets will get the initial shot at 1B (his original position before CWS converted him to the OF). Preller indicated they will likely add a "complement" to Sheets. (my read is that if they add a RHH it is a lower cost part-time 1B (25-30% of the games at best) ... sounds like a spot for France but not a Hoskins or Goldschmidt and probably not a trade for a Vientos / Mayo).
- Campusano will get a full run at the #2 catcher role (my read is they may add another non-roster just in case option to go along with Hunt but are not finding any other suitable options at their price).
- By elimination and consistent with earlier comments that they would like the DH to facilitate the rotation of starters for "rest" periods, not looking for a major full time DH type. Song may get his AB as a LHH option at DH/2B/3B and then maybe they add another RHH option to perform a similar role. Again, part time low cost rotational. Sort of pushes against any major trade or big name FA.
OK with that (depending on the adds) but they did not speak to SP ... so maybe any money / trades focus there?
With Preller all could be smoke if the right deal pops up.

Quote from fenn68 on February 4, 2026, 2:42 pmCatch the brass ring?
Padres just signed Riley Pint to a minor league contract with a ST invite. He is still only 28 and was the 4th pick overall in the 2016 draft ... major FB/stuff WHEN HEALTHY (that has been a problem) during his career and missed all of 2025. In 2024 as a RP strikeout 70 in only 41 innings (AAA).
Also signed Justin Yeager (28 / RP) ... good MiL stats but seems more like insurance in AAA.

1 year/$4 mil
Don't dislike It, hits LHP very well, If I remember correctly, an issue the team had last year.

He was on may target list and slightly less cost than expected.
Hits LHP (clearly a Padres' need) whether it is a platoon with Sheets or as the DH. Has some defensive flexibility with experience in LF and 3B ... and given his 3B experience should not have a major issue sliding over to 1B. Not great defense but OK. So, for now, some rotation with Andujar - Sheets (L) - Song (L) covering 1B/DH. Maybe Campusano can fill the other part-time RHH DH role ... two LHH / two RHH.
His issue is he does get injured (so something to watch out for) and really has not shown to be a 150+ game guy ... but for $4MM the Padres are just looking for that part-time player.
Of the FA left ... he gives the best combo of offense / defense / versatility to one of the lower salaries.

I like it, good stick v. LHP I see him and Sheets as the LH/RH platoon at 1B, with Song and the rest of the INF using DH as a rest spot once or twice a week or so.

Quote from ultratvfan on February 4, 2026, 8:15 pmAndujar is a good pickup and he is only 30 years old.
Tigers sign Valdez for 3 years, $115 million. Could this mean they are planning on trading Skubal?
If they do, I want him to go to any team but the Dodgers. I hope AJ works his magic and somehow lands him for a reasonable price.

$38.333MM AAV for Valdez is outrageous. Especially when they went low on the ARB offer to Skubal (around $19MM) and did not agree to the $32MM his side is asking in ARB. If anything, this should sway the arbitrator to Skubal's number as it shows the market being higher.
Either Detroit is going for the one big push before they loose Skubal to FA next season or, yes, they think they have a deal that will bring in some top prospects while, with Valdez, keeping the SP about the same.
Not many teams can (or would) pick up $32MM and give quality prospects for just one year of Skubal. Plus the teams in the CBT penalty zone will have to pay beyond that ... think the LAD and NYM in the the 100% penalty zone ... so their cost would be $64MMish. Yet, the can and just might.
Either way this should bust out log jam of pitchers signing in the next week.
