2025-26 Offseason thread

Concur that we likely will be better off trading a slightly better than average RP for a major league average bat.  This could be with the Mets, Baltimore or other teams who have tried to fill some bullpen voids but will find out in ST that they still need more help.  Should that happen, we might even force that team to take Peralta or Matsui to give us a little more wiggle room to find another SP for the #4 slot in the rotation or just depth.

I hesitate to get someone who has a long history of injury like Giolito, but even at 37, Bassitt could be a decent innings eater getting better results than Sears would get.  On the other hand, pitchers are so unpredictable and one tweak by Niebla could make a less than average pitcher serviceable for our rotation - at this point the bar is not very high.  Still time ... let's get that hitter first.

With the idea that Preller hasnt done a big offseason trade, and Peralta is no longer available, does Preller check in on former Padre Gore?

Well, scratch that idea. TEX has just traded for Gore. 5 players for Gore. Not sure if it is a quantity or quality 5, or a mix as MLBTR has not listed the guys going back to WAS.

Saw the reported list ... none clear elite prospects ... Fein (INF) was the 12th pick in the draft out of HS last year, so upside I guess but 4-5 years out. Don't think any of the others were highly ranked even in Texas' system. So, I guess WASH is going volume to maybe hit on someone as part of a new multi-year rebuild.

Seems light for Gore ... 2 years control under arb and only $5.5MM this season. On the other hand, his 4.17 ERA last season was just "average" for SP. With all the teams needing to fill out their SP rotation ... surprised competition did not drive up the price by more. Maybe WASH really loved Fein in the draft and see more upside in one (or more of the others).

know there are plenty of chairs left.... But it sure does feel like the music is winding down, and from where we're standing, I'm not sure there are any empty seats realistic enough for us to grab.

I appreciate fenn's optimism about our current roster, but man, it sure would be nice to feel like our roster has a chance at being as good or better than it was last year when it quite obviously was not good enough. Not sure how realistic our chances are anymore of making that happen.

Beginning to really think the budget limit may be tighter than we hoped. Not only not in on some of the trade targets  (also in part to maybe no appealing trade chips for the other teams ... ones that Preller wants to trade for the object player) but also not much in the way of minor filler adds either at the ML or minor league level.

Could be Preller needs to shed payroll in order to add payroll ... not easy if no one wants the player and the contract (e.g. Matsui). Even if a small amount of flexibility ... needs multiple upgrades / filler and therefore needs to not shoot it all on one ... rather wait until the asks on some players drop enough to use his resources for multiple adds.

At this point, can't see a trade chip other than out of the bullpen ... aways a need by others ... but not expecting a blockbuster return just useful to improve the 26 man roster.

Oh I believe it very likely will be better than last year.....but would like another solid SP...

A full season of Laureano/Miller/Fermin in itself is better than what we started with last season.

Position players IMO will outproduce last season.

Bullpen will be hard to duplicate but still feel they will be top 5 in MLB.

It's just the rotation I'm a little worried about still.

But Cease was so inconsistent maybe he won't be missed that much.

It all depends on Musgrove and King being able to log enough quality innings for us.

King/Pivetta/Musgrove is a good 1-3

But we need a solid #4 and then only need  Sears,McKenzie,Waldron,Brito in case of emergencies....which always happen.

There are still a lot of guys available....if AJ doesn't work out a deal like the one Tex just did for Gore I suspect he may even wait till ST to sign one.

Maybe Mendez wins a spot?

Or Haynes figures out why he walks so many hitters and wins one?

I think that Vasquez takes another small step forward from last season. He made a step up from 2024 to 2025. I am actually OK with him being #4 in 2026. He made 26 starts last season, almost 5 IP per start, with an ERA under 4.00. To be honest, his performance last season was on par with Gore, minus the strikeouts. Does he have #1 stuff like Gore, not in the slightest. Is he an inexpensive #4 on a very good team, I think so.

So really, 1-4 for SD at the start is not a bad start to the season.

Anyone up for running out Arraez again?

Personally, I'm hoping AJ finds a better option both in the field and the thump but he does get lots of hits and doesn't K much( not totally rotten skills).

Has anyone shown any interest in Luis this off season?

Gore traded to the Rangers and Peralta traded to the Mets.

I am still waiting for AJ to make a splash. Skubal would be a great addition if AJ can work his magic and get him for a good price.
