Yeh, Sheets is on the bubble for me. He did well early in 2025 but tapered off a bit down the stretch.
Post All-Star a .695 OPS (slightly below average although not bad) but is that a sign of regression?
At PETCO a .705 OPS (slightly below average)
v LHP a .670 OPS (not totally unacceptable)
In the grand scheme of things ... that is OK combined with his ROAD and RHP work (assume no major regression). He is only a "second tier" player in the line-up.
However, Padres did have struggles vs LHP and the team may be more competitive with a strong RHH presence (one who might also hit RHP decently). Without a lot of payroll room (and still wanting to boost pitching and offensive depth) using Sheets' $4+MM might get a more "balanced" hitter with more versatility defensively without cutting into the budget.
Not a clear call and probably depends on who (and for what price) is available and / or other moves such as a Cronenworth trade.

Trade for Yandy Diaz....use the money saved when Yu retires (speculation) and sign Justin Verlander for 1 season.

The Pirates and first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn have agreed to a two-year deal with a $29MM guarantee, reports Robert Murray of FanSided. The ACES client can also earn an extra $500K each year via incentives. Pittsburgh has a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move for this to become official.
Sort of why the Padres were not in the mix ... $14.5MM AAV.

Wait a minute, I just saw a report from FOX Sports that San Diego is bringing back O’Hearn on a two-year deal?
I was coming here to say never mind on Diaz.

Don't save any money if Darvish retires due to injury ... his contract remains valid Cash and CBT. Need to work out a buyout extension. (I do think is a distinct possibility at some point).
Diaz has a $12MM deal for 2026 (TB will not eat money) then a 2027 FA. Not sure what TB would want considering they really need offense while the Padres would want to shed payroll as a cost offset.
Does not seem like a match best I can see is Padres give: Sheets; Sears; Matsui (or Peralta) for a close push on dollars and sweeten it with Campusano and/or a prospect. TB does get extra control years besides depth. Padres get an impact RHH DH and clear some future liabilities.
TB could do better ... maybe for them more importantly get cheaper return players.

Without anything specific in mind ... did a quick look at the Padres returning line-up (that is the main 8 not including Song). Basically how they did vs LHP and RHP with the idea where Sheets fits in.
Surprisingly the Padres players had excellent offense (two year look) vs RHP with Sheets sitting 6th of the 8 (wRC+) ... just over 100.
On the other hand those players and much poorer results vs LHP and Sheets was last in wRC+ results at around 78.
So, not surprisingly, the Padres have issues with LHP ... so an added RHH be it at DH (Song to utility) and/or a platoon for Sheets is a minimum need. However, since Sheets' work is not critical vs RHP ... the idea of adding a full time RHH even if only "average" vs RHP may be better for the line-up from major upgrade vs LHP.
The LHH components of Merrill, Cronenworth, and Song should work well with Tatis, Machado, and Laureano to handle RHP at an above average level but the added effective bat vs LHP help cover Merrill and Cronenworth who are weaker vs LHP.
So, the scenario of moving Sheets ... clearing $4MM+ ... and adding a RHH might make a lot of sense be it Hays or France or ????
