I'm guessing any deal with the Mets will have to wait until they land another big bat for the line-up.  Maybe no earlier than the first week of January.  Still targeting Vientos and certainly would like to get one of their young SP prospects - Sproat or Tong - if the price is not too high.  Otherwise, just Vientos is okay.

Doubt the Padres have the trade chips to get Tong or Sproat ... METS need pitching and have them both ticketed for the 26 man. Not sure even using Pivetta would get them in the deal.

Vientos is clearly in play by the METS ... but the only logical Padre match was with RP and METS have been adding to the pen so the need is diminished. He is at league minimum with 4 years control ... METS not under pressure to move him and, for now, their starting 1B. Don't see this one happening.

For what it's worth one of the Baseball America writers said that the Padres have had meetings with Murakami's representatives on the Foul Territory podcast yesterday. He echoed what others have said in reporting that his market has been a lot softer than expected with teams having serious concerns about his ability to hit major league pitching and his defensive ability. I still don't think it's likely, but maybe there's a chance his market is soft enough that we could take a shot on his power upside with a creative contract.

Justyn-Henry Malloy who just got DFAd by the Tigers could make for a decent target in a minor trade. He's got big minor league numbers and has handled lefties really well during his limited time in the majors. He's still got 2 option years left. The Tigers started to get him some 1B work last year. He could be a decent depth pick up and potentially compete for a bench spot.

Agree ... bit surprised he was the DFA off their 40 man (which is full). Decent bat with good plate discipline .... but a poor fielder anywhere. DH fit with a hope he could develop at 1B (he originally was a 3B so INF should not be foreign).

Would guess multiple teams put in claims setting up a minor trade scenario. Padres are only at 38 on the 40 man so no offsetting move would be required.

With a full 40 man in DET ... likely a Padre non-roster player would work for them (since he is being DFA DET can't expect more). More a question of the quality of player any other team offers.

Padres are strong in the pen ... teams always want RP depth ... so maybe someone such as Pena or Castro in AAA would work (maybe even less).

Young enough with two more option years and ML experience and some hitting skills added to a thin ML/MiL Padres system of limited offense potential (near term) makes too much sense.

2026 would set up (given no new adds) a nice competition for the RHH bench option between him and Miranda (non-roster). Sheets, Cronenworth, Song, and Wagner are LHH in the 2B/1B/DH mix.

The White Sox are in agreement with infielder Munetaka Murakami on a two-year deal worth $34MM, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Passan adds that Murakami is expected to play first base in Chicago.

This is WAY BELOW the earlier projections on Fangraphs of 6 years / $132MM ($22MM AAV). From what I have read ... most teams (scouts) had a real concern about his ability to make contact at the ML level and his defense is also a concern.

I can think of a lot better (more predictable) uses for $17MM ... if the Padres have that to deploy.

Anyone down for reunion with O'Hearn? Get a weak side platoon for him/Sheets such as Castellonos?

I don't think either O'Hearn or Arraez will be back for next season, unless they take the MLB veteran minimum and neither would do that.  By the way, O'Hearn is a LHH, so he would not be a weak side platoon with Sheets.  Most likely going to be saying good bye to both and good luck to them elsewhere.  Go Pads!

Triston Casas anyone? Boston just traded for Cards' 1B Contreras and seem to be ready to move on from Casas.

Unfortunately a LHH but only 25 with a good bat and some power ... a 1B/DH type. 3 years control and probably less than $2MM in ARB.

Might be in play if the dominoes have the Padres moving Cronenworth (somewhere) with Song taking 2B. Sure would prefer a RHH but one needs to be available on the cheap and not sure I am seeing that.

Side: never seems to come up ... but would not rule out dealing Sheets given the feeling he really is a platoon player coming off his breakout (or anomaly) year. Sheets has only 2 years control and is projected to exceed $4MM in ARB.

We've seen a lot of pitchers go through the system in trades but there is one in particular that I would like to see back and that is Jairo Iriarte.  He had some of the nastiest pitches I've ever seen as a minor leaguer and gets great extension off the mound with that 6:04 frame.  He seemed to be reigning in his control in 2023 when he was traded to the White Sox in the Cease trade as one of the key players they obtained.

He had a rough 2025, possibly due to injury and MLB Pipeline has him down to the #17 prospect with several RHPs ranked above him.  Further,  it appears the Sox have moved away from him as a starter so maybe they don't have him ranked highly in their future plans.  Is it possible we can buy low?  I rank him better than Mendez and (with the right adjustments) better than Mayfield.  Dead time during the holidays, so just remembering watching Iriarte and being awed by his potential.

Was coming in to suggest the same.

What is Boston's need for a left handed relief pitcher? Peralta or Matsui?

And as for Casas being a lefty, ANY bat with thump would be welcome, especially at 1B.
