2024 Playoff Roster

Ok Padre fans, who makes the playoff roster? MLB teams are allowed 26 players, with up to 13 pitchers.
My prediction:
Position players =
- Arrez, DH/1B/2B
- Tatis, RF
- Profar, LF
- Machado, 3B
- Merrill, CF
- Bogaerts, SS
- Cronenworth, 2B/1B
- Solano, 1B/DH/RHPH
- D. Peralta, RF/LF/DH/LHPH
- Higashioka, C
- Diaz, C
- Lockridge, OF/PR
- Wade, 2B/SS/3B/OF/PR and/or Ahmed SS/2B (or both, going with 14 position players)
Pitchers
- Cease, RHSP
- King, RHSP
- Musgrove, RHSP
- Darvish, RHSP
- Suarez, RHRP
- Scott, LHRP
- Adam, RHRP
- Estrada, RHRP
- Morejon, LHRP
- Hoeing, RHRP
- W. Peralta, LHRP
- Perez, LHRP (long relief)
- Matsui, LHRP
So for me, the only real dilemma is for the 26 roster spot. Go with 14 position players keeping both Wade & Ahmed active and only 12 pitchers with Matsui being the odd man out or going with 13 postion players and having to choose between Wade or Ahmed and having 13 pitchers active, including Matsui. My gut tells me that Schildt will remain loyal to the season long contributions of Wade & Matsui, leaving Ahmed as the odd man out, sitting in case of injury happens to a position player. Sean Reynolds is next up if a pitching injury occurs among the relief pitchers, if a starter should go down, then Randy Vasquez is the next man up.

If Perez makes a regular start today I think he's left off the roster for the wildcard round. I did read that some players are pushing for Waldron to be added today to honor his contributions this season. If that happens maybe he's the bulk guy after an abbreviated start from Perez. I'm guessing Perez will be off and they'll carry 14 position players. They don't need as much pitching in a 3 game series. I think the only other question might be if they believe enough in Reynolds to take him over Matsui or Peralta. A big power strikeout arm could be a valuable weapon.

Looks like they did it. Waldron was added in place of Vasquez. We'll see if that changes the calculus.

Good point Jeremy about the possibility of Martin Perez not being active for the wild card round. You might be spot on. The only thing they might want to have Perez active for, is in case they need a long man because a starter didn't have it on a particular day. Perez only threw 64 pitches in 3.2 innings today, so I doubt he could go on Tuesday or Wednesday, but could possibly be ready by Thursday. The more I think about, the more I think you are correct and he gets left off the wildcard round playoff roster.

I was really close in my initial prediction, 14 position players including Ahmed and only 12 pitchers with Matsui selected over Perez for the Wild Card round. Go Pads!

In the NLDS against the Dog-ers, Martin Perez will be activated to replace Joe Musgrove. Also, I see the Pads dropping Ahmed from the active roster and replacing him with Sean Reynolds to add a 13th arm to the playoff roster. Can't wait for this series! Go Pads! Beat LA!

San Diego unveiled that roster on Saturday morning, ahead of Game 1 in the evening at Dodger Stadium. Two pitchers -- Martín Pérez and Alek Jacob -- were added to the roster in Musgrove's place. The Padres chose to add an extra arm to the 12 they carried for the NL Wild Card Series against the Braves, opting for an even split -- 13 pitchers and 13 position players.
Backup shortstop Nick Ahmed also gave way (with Tyler Wade and any other number of one-time shortstops on this Padres roster capable of handling those duties).

Musgrove still has not yet been place on the IL.

So Perez is in for Musgrove and Jacob is added with Ahmed dropped for an even split of 13 hitters and 13 pitchers. Go Padres! Beat L.A.!

There's no IL to put him on in the postseason.
