MLBTradeRumors is reporting that Preller is still looking to add a bat

With Arraez, Merrill, Cronenworth, and Heyward all LHH starting vs RHP ... not sure another LHH is really needed in a starting DH/LF role. I would be more inclined for a RHH to offset those 4 LHH already in the line-up vs RHP but vs. LHP provide a stronger offense even after sitting Heyward for Joe. Only get one ... needs to be good ... but somewhat favor a RHH.

If Preller is looking ... he usually finds ... so, should be interesting.

While the quartet of Crone, Merrill, Arraez, and Heyward do provide LHH; with the exception of Merrill none of them really provide power. I would love to see an add that provides some LH pop

I guess the counter issue is that none of Cronenworth, Arraez, Merrill, or Heyward hit LHP even near "average". Should include D.Peralta if re-signed. Joe will start over Hayward vs LHP but the others will play vs LHP with that very low power rate and not great average. So adding another LHH starter might increase a weakness vs LHSP unless that LHH add is platooned with someone like Rosario as a RHH.

The RHH contingent of Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts should provide power / offense vs both LHP and RHP. So pretty good base.

So do the Padres want a RHH to mash LHP and "cover" the LHH weakness in the line-up (but for just 25% of the starts) OR do they want a LHH masher vs RHP in 75% of the starts to complement what may not be a bad current line-up while making them potentially weaker vs LHSP? Only room for so many on the roster plus the issue of defensive coverage limiting the choices.

At this point probably the best low cost option and work around that player's skills.

Lin wrote about Rosario getting time in LF, to add to his utility role and the possibility of he and Joe being a LF/DH platoon tandem vs. L. The emphasis was that Rosario, in very limited sample size, ate up left handed pitching.

Merrill hit .340 off of lefties in the 2nd half. It was only 52 PAs, but there's reason for optimism there. Arraez is worse against lefties across the board. His BA and OBP are still solid though. The issue is that his already limited power is even more limited against them. He's still playable. It's just not ideal. Heyward isn't going to play against lefties. Cronenworth shouldn't either. I would like to see him platoon with Rosario. They're talking like he's going to be an everyday guy.

The FA market is pretty thin at this point. Maybe they could look at guys like Mark Canha, Justin Turner and J.D. Martinez. They may still be looking for more than we want to pay. A trade is probably the best way to add a bat at this point. Maybe we could figure something out with a team like the Red Sox who look like they're going to have a bit of a roster crunch coming up soon.

Could we possibly catch lightning in a bottle with LHH 1B/OF Gavin Sheets?  I hope so!

Did Sheets sign a split contract or just a minor league deal and if he made the opening day roster then is he paid the MLB minimum contract?

How do you find out if a player has any minor league options left?

Sheets signed a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.  The major websites have him projected at less than replacement value, less than 1.0 war.  So, he is unlikely to be the LH power guy we need as a 1B/DH unfortunately.

Every player on the 26 man roster must get league minimum … pro-rated for time up.

Fangraphs - Roster Resource tab gets you to minor league options left.

Not likely with the Padres at any point baring an emergency … a real bad emergency.

I still think Suarez will be traded.

When AJ sees a few weeks of guys like Bradgley Rodriguez and some of these other young guys in Camp I think he'll take one of the deals he's sitting on.

Obv he already knows all there is to know about these guys...but if/when they show they can get ML hitters out he may make the move.

Something to watch
