2023 Lake Elsinore Storm

When we last spoke with Jagger Haynes in 2020, he was a relatively unknown 17-year-old left-handed pitcher who had just been drafted out of the same North Carolina county as former Padres top prospect MacKenzie Gore.
Nearly three years later, the 20-year-old Haynes, after that season lost to COVID and a lingering elbow injury that ultimately led to Tommy John surgery, is finally preparing for his professional debut with Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm.

Low-A Lake Elsinore will have Robby Snelling, part of a young, talented pitching staff, on the mound as they host Visalia at 7:15.

Snelling has looked terrific through 3 IP.. way better than I anticipated for a kid just out of HS

MiLB blacked out San Diego so I didn't get to see Snelling; sounds like he did fine even though his pitch count seemed a little high for 3 innings. It was a mixed bag for Ft. Wayne (Iriarte) and San Antonio (Contreras). Iriarte flashed great stuff, getting up to 99 mph on one of his strikeouts, but was not efficient getting into too many 2-2 and 3-2 counts. He gave up only two hits but both were hit hard because his location was off - catching too much of the plate. His box score line looked better than his performance but having seen him a lot last year, I would say he is on the right track but still has some work to do.
Contreras looked great for the first 2 innings and then completely lost it in the 3rd. When his breaking pitch flattened out they hit it hard and then ambushed his FB. He regained focus to finish the 3rd inning but the damage was done and he had reached his pitch limit. Have to see whether he can go more than 2 effective innings before I become convinced he should remain a SP.
The Storm offense did pretty well, including the guy I was championing - Fabian. Got some awfully young guys starting in key positions - Zavala in CF and Verdugo at ss; still expect to see Salas there eventually although Vilar had a great game and Linares is a solid prospect at catcher.
