minus Euribiel Angeles (12) ... traded to A's ...

Because he's not likely on many of our lists ... from today's DFR ...

The star of the game for the TinCaps was starter Ryan Bergert. If he is a name you aren’t familiar with, you probably should start adding him to your list. Bergert was a sixth-round pick out of West Virginia. However, he only fell to the sixth round because he missed all of the 2021 season after undergoing surgery in December. The Padres gave him roughly third-round money to convince him to leave West Virginia early. In his three starts with the TinCaps, Bergert has pitched 13 innings, allowing eight hits, three earned runs with one walk, and 19 strikeouts. Bergert is currently in the top 10 in the MWL in strikeouts, WHIP, and BAA. All of this success has come despite Bergert throwing just three innings the last two seasons.

Another pitcher not on my radar at all ...

Key Stats: LHP Noel Vela, 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K;

Prospect Watch: It has felt like every time (including last week) Noel Vela took the mound, the common response was, “Gee, if Vela could cut down the walks, there would be something elite happening here.” Well, that didn’t take long. Vela struck out 10 batters in five innings without issuing a free pass, his first start of the year with fewer than two free passes. In the process, the 2017 28th-rounder dropped his ERA to a league-leading 0.44 in 20.1 innings. These numbers are phenomenal, but it’s not to say Vela came from nowhere. His 2021 came with a 3.90 ERA split between the two Single-A affiliates, and he struck out 107 batters in 87.2 innings. That said, this is a large step forward.

The TinCaps appeared to be on the way to victory thanks to a stellar start by Robert Gasser, but a rare ninth inning implosion by Ryan Och gave the Timber Rattlers their fifth win in the series. Gasser, 22, turned in a career-high six innings, allowing just one single along the way. The lefty did walk three and hit a batter, but even that hit batter came on a slider that almost earned a swinging strike three before clipping the hitter in the back foot. The outing brought the ERA of the Padres’ supplemental pick last summer down to 3.55 in six starts and carried his strikeout total to 36 in 25.1 innings.

Noticed by BA in today's Prospect Report ...

Thursday's Prospect Performers

Noel Vela, LHP, Padres: The minors’ ERA leader lowered his ERA to a hard-to-spot 0.34 with six scoreless innings on Thursday against High-A South Bend. It was the third time Vela has faced South Bend in seven starts. Despite his success to start the year, Vela was battling his control in April. But this month, he’s struck out 18 and walked one in two starts.

Would be “amazing” if this kid is the real deal.

The Padres really need a few pitchers to step up from the Farm for 24’ and beyond.
