A nice 8-3 win on Opening Day!

CJ hitting 2nd and playing SS went 2-for-5 plus a walk

Pedro Avila pitched the 9th!

Well so much for taking it easy on the SP .... Knehr went 5 innings ....87 pitches (57 strikes) .... good effort with 3 hits, 3 walks, 5 K ... 2 ER.

On the top prospect list for the Padres and the Padres seem to like his stuff ...

re: Knehr ... this comment from the DFR seems worth highlighting ...

Reiss Knehr drew the opening day assignment and earned the win with five solid innings. The 24-year old out of Fordham University walked the leadoff hitter in the fifth, but bounced back to strike out the side to finish the outing with a resounding climax. With all the trades the Padres have made over the past year, a strong start could make Knehr a viable option for big-league innings later in the year. Knehr failed to make a full-season club out of spring training in 2019 but he finished the year strong in Lake Elsinore. He features a fastball that sits 93-95 mph and touched 98 in the Storm playoff run of 2019.

Remember the Minors seasons are shortened.  Guys in MLB ST like Knehr & Elliott were had PLENTY of time to stretch out; teams may have some guys like these they want to hit a relatively "high" IP ceiling this year to be well positioned to add more next year.

AA and lower loose 20 games (140 to 120 I think) ... 4 starts per SP ... still could get over 100 innings in their 24+/- starts.

Did notice that Knehr (SA) - Elliott (FW) - Thomas (LE) yesterday and Waldron (FW) today are all "older" minor leaguers (college types) and Martinez (SA) is 24. Must be some thinking of the older guys are better positioned to go deep early in the season while the "younger" prospects need to be more carefully handled .. maybe why Lange and Haynes plus others did not make LE.
