2021 MLB Draft

Sunday is the MLB Draft and the Padres are picking #27 in the first round. All depends on who falls to #27 (or who the Padres rate higher than most) but the following six High School players have been linked to the Padres:

17. LHP Anthony Solometo (NJ)
19. C Joe Mack (NY)
20. OF Will Taylor (SC)
27. RHP Chase Petty (NJ)
33. OF Jay Allen (FL)
39. LHP Frank Mozzicato (CT)
Have not heard much about College types but for those following Preller's travels to the NE ... 4 of the 6 are from the NE and the other two are on the East Coast.
Probably a straight forward pick this year being so late in the 1st round but Preller has a history of going for an under-slot pick early to go over slot on a difficult sign later ... don't know if any of these are under-slot potential or we get a "surprise" name. Next Padre pick is #62 I believe.

The list of players taken at #27 is ... grim ...
On the other hand, Mike Trout was a 25th pick ... just sayin' ...

I guess being successful at #27 (or later) is a combo of good scouting / projecting, good system development folks, and then a ton of luck to get anyone elite or even who develops into a quality ML player.
Considering the current Padres 26 man roster is composed of only 4 players drafted prior to #27 (Machado, Grisham, Hosmer, and Weathers) then 7 international signees and 15 players drafted AFTER #27 there is still reason for hope. Should note only 1 of those 15 was drafted by the Padres (Knehr) and only 1 on the pre-#27 (Weathers).
Actually 11 of the 15 were AFTER the 3rd round ... including Cronenworth and Pham. I guess every pick is important.

Well looks like some slot money games to start the draft ... Mazzicato (ranked #39) goes #7 to KC.
Pretty safe to say he has agreed to a way way under slot deal already leaving KC with a ton for later picks over slot. Probably indicates that the separation of the players early in the draft is not that compelling.
Baltimore looks at #5 to do the same ... just not as dramatically.

So that effectively means the Padres are picking the 25th best player ... which has a little better track record (not even counting Trount :-)) ...

Wonder if the Padres wanted Chase Petty ... just selected a pick ahead. Petty is having dinner with Machado and Tatis tomorrow night ... hmmm.

Don’t want to hear “best player available” when discussing the MLB draft ever again.
This isn’t the NFL Draft.
This BS happens all the time and it drives me crazy…..5 years from now we will be talking about the next great player we “could” have had.
Matt Bush anyone?

We could have drafted a top 30 player and still got this kid with our next pick.
But because of the slot $ rules it becomes a game of “who can you sign” instead of just selecting the best players.
Super frustrating….because we are missing out on a top 30 player to add to a depleted farm system.
